ANNE U. BERTULIS

HONESDALE — Anne U. Bertulis of Honesdale, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was 89.

Daughter of the late James and Mary Dutkus Burokus, she was born in Maywood, NJ.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

Survivors include a son, Gerald J. of Honesdale and a brother, Dr. William Burokus of Honesdale.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Mary Magdelen’s Church in Honesdale. Burial was in the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.

MARY MARGARET CHERVENICK

BEACH LAKE — Mary Margaret Chervenick of Beach Lake, a former medical secretary for the Diagnostic Center in New Jersey and a 19-year area resident, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 80.

Daughter of Michael and Delia Connolly Gilmartin, she was born October 17, 1920 in the Bronx, NY.

Survivors include her husband, Emil, at home.

Services were held at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg, NY. The Rev. Thomas Jones officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

HEATHER DOLLARD

ROCK HILL — Heather Dollard of Rock Hill died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at home. She was 13.

Daughter of John and Mary Dollard, she was born August 7, 1987 in Harris.

Survivors include her parents; a sister, Mary Kay; and two brothers, John E. and Ed, all at home; her maternal grandfather, Dick Smith of Bethel; aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral Mass was offered at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Monticello. Monsignor Edward Straub officiated. Cremation was private.

MILTON GOLDBERG

LAKE WORTH, FL — Milton Goldberg of Lake Worth, FL, former owner of Jack’s Restaurant in Monticello, an icon of Kaplan’s Restaurant of Monticello, a former 30-year Monticello resident, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at home.

He was a World War II veteran and was awarded two Bronze Stars for heroism.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Lake Worth, FL; two children, Jay and Barbara, both of Florida; and a grandson, Joshua.

Services and burial were held at the Palm Beach Memorial Gardens in Lake Worth, FL.

JOHANNA KRUG

HAWLEY — Johanna Krug of Hawley, formerly of Maspeth, NY, died August 6, 2001 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 89.

She was born in Seusling, Germany. She was the widow of Hans Krug.

She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley and the Honesdale German Club.

Survivors include her son, Eric of Fairfield, CT; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was offered at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

ROBERT A. LOWE

MONTICELLO — Robert A. Lowe of Monticello, an employee of Dean Construction in Neversink and a 23-year area resident, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 46.

Son of John and Eva Avery Lowe, he was born March 5, 1955 in New Castle, Indiana.

He served from 1972 to 1974 in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Survivors include his mother of Indianapolis, Indiana; his wife, Carolyn, at home; three daughters, Barbara of Hurleyville, Shawna of South Fallsburg and Amy, at home; a brother, Gerald “Butch” of Indianapolis, IN; four sisters, Jenny Johnson and Faye, both of Indianapolis, Lynn Rodriques of Denton, MI and Jane of Mississippi; a grandson, Camron Batres; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald.

Services were held at Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Monticello. The Rev. Robert C. Nadelen officiated. Burial was in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

IRENE MARY MAYO

HONESDALE — Irene Mary Mayo of Honesdale, a retired secretary for the U.S. Army and a 12-year area resident, died Sunday, August 5, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 79.

Daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Leyko, she was born in Brooklyn, NY. She was the widow of John Mayo.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary S. Bierema of Honesdale; four brothers, Stanley, Walter, Frank and Hank, all of New York City; two sisters, Emily and Julia, both of New York City; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Grove and Bonnie Smith; and a brother, Ted.

A funeral Mass was offered at St. Mary Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

ELSIE L. JANUS MOTICHKA

HONESDALE – Elsie L. Janus Motichka of Honesdale, died unexpectedly Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at home. She was 71.

Daughter of the late John and Josephine Sarnowski Janus, she was born in Jefferson Township.

She graduated from the former Scranton Central High School.

She was a member of St. John Evangelist Parish and its Altar and Rosary Societies. She belonged to “The Quilters” of St. John’s and was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was once a leader in the 4H Club of Wayne County and taught sewing.

Survivors include her husband, Francis J. Motichka; four sons, Francis R. and wife Cindy of Lake Ariel, Stephen and wife Jennifer of Tyler Hill, Joseph of Honesdale, James and wife Anna Maria of Honesdale; five daughters, Diane Popovich of Beach Lake, Joanne Regan of Coatesville, Susan LaTournous of Harrisburg, Dolores Motichka and husband John Kasht of Alexandria, VA and Teresa of San Francisco, CA; two brothers, Edward Janus of Lake Ariel and Daniel Janus of Moscow; a sister, Stella Janus of Lake Ariel; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Hemmier; and five brothers, Joseph, John, Thomas, William and Stanley Janus; and an infant granddaughter, Jennifer.

A Mass was offered in St. Mary Magdalen’s Roman Catholic Church of Honesdale. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

JOHN M. NEARY

HONESDALE — John M. Neary of Honesdale, a retired 25-year representative for the Automobile Association of America, died unexpectedly Monday, August 6, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 74.

Son of John L. and Sadie C. Rowe Neary, he was born in Adella in Wayne County.

He graduated from Jessup High School and George Washington University, which he attended on a football scholarship. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his companion and caregiver, Annabelle Bixler; a sister, Elizabeth Alexander of Rexford, NY; four nephews, Donald F. Neary II of Honesdale, Joseph M. Alexander, Jr. of Clifton Park, NY, John S. Alexander of Burnt Hills, NY and Michael J. Alexander of Charlton, NY; three great-nieces and two great-nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Donald F.

Services were held at Teeters’ First Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. Bryan Wright, assistant pastor of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, officiated. Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

HELEN S. SHAFFER

HONESDALE — Helen S. Shaffer of Honesdale died Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 89.

Daughter of the late Benjamin W. and Evelyn Hafler Jackson, she was born in Hollisterville. She was the widow of Raymond V. Shaffer.

She was a member of the Cold Springs-Rileyville Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Hiller of Honesdale; a brother, Frank Jackson; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Raymond Stephens; two brothers, Floyd and Eugene; and three sisters, Mildred, Mamie and Carrie.

Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Revs. Albert A. Chafee of the First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale and Jon Buxton of the White Mills United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst.

MARY R. MALLOY SMITH

HAWLEY — Mary R. Malloy Smith of Hawley, formerly employed by the SKF Defense Plant in Lansdale, The Hat Factory in Hawley and the former Katz Factory in Honesdale, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 82.

Daughter and last surviving member of the Thomas and Alice Diamond Malloy family, she was born August 15, 1918 in Honesdale.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and its Altar and Rosary Societies in Honesdale.

Survivors include her husband, Robert J.; three sons, Bernard of Rochester, MI, Steven and wife Eileen of Milford and Vince and wife Cheryl of Hawley; two daughters, Jane Rowan and husband Larry of Gurnee, IL and Mary Ellen Bayly of High Bridge, NJ; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Bernard, who was killed in World War II.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

ELLEN W. TESSMER

YULAN — Ellen W. Tessmer of Yulan, a homemaker and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, August 5, 2001 at the Madison Center in Matawan, NJ. She was 75.

Daughter of the late Charles and Mary Courtney Walters, she was born December 20, 1925 in Queens. She was the widow of Rudolph H. Tessmer.

She was a member of the Eldred United Methodist Church, the Highland Senior Citizens, the Lumberland Senior Citizens and AARP.

Survivors include two daughters, Suellen Lass of Matawan, NJ and Irene Andujar of Keansburg, NJ; two sons, Charles of Brewster and R.J. of Westland, MI; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville. Pastor Linda Bohs officiated. Burial was in Montoza Cemetery in Barryville.

MILDRED B. SOULE

SWAN LAKE — Mildred B. Soule of Swan Lake, a retired teacher for the Monticello Central Schools, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 94.

Daughter of the late Vincent and Adelaide Ule Bollin, she was born August 4, 1907 in Liberty. She was the widow of William M. Soule.

She was a member of the Kauneonga Lake Community United Methodist Church, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Bethelites Home Extension Unit and was active in various other community and civic affairs.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Marie Deppa and Joan Yeomans, both of Swan Lake; a sister, Edith Marshall of Union, NJ; a sister-in-law, Margaret Schillinger of White Sulphur Springs; 10 grandchldren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, William, Jr.; and two sisters, Gertrude McAuliffe and Ruby Pinkerous.

A memorial service was held at the Kauneonga Lake Community United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiated. Private cremation took place in the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope. WARREN K. UMLAUF

LITITZ, PA — Warren K. Umlauf of Lititz, a retired 10-year woodworker for Jenkintown Steel Woodworking Division in Souderton, PA, died August 5, 2001 at Maple Farms Nursing Center in Akron, PA, where he had been a resident for the past month. He was 89.

Son of the late William and Emma Gerhart Umlauf, he was born in Lavelle, PA.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six bronze stars. He was former owner and operator of the H&M Luncheonette in Souderton.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn G. Brauser Umlauf; two daughters, Darlene Strathmyer and husband Gerald of Lititz and Diane Barndt and husband Raymond of Silverdale; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
