Cochecton
moves to protect its roads
By TOM KANE
LAKE HUNTINGTON — The Town of Cochecton Board held
a special meeting last week and passed an order to limit the tonnage
allowed on a select number of its town roads.
The tonnage limit of 10 ton was imposed on Fred
White, Chalk, Hoffman, Tyler and Daub Roads.
“We expect that a large number of heavy trailer
truck will be hauling crusher stone and blacktop for the construction
of roads in the Weiden Lake project and we’re afraid of what that
will do to our roads,” said town supervisor Sal Indelicato.
The Weiden Lake Estates project, which has 2.5
miles of road, has already laid down gravel. A layer of crusher
and a layer of black top will be needed to complete the surface,
said Allan Lord, acquisitions manager for Sumner of New York, the
developers of the project.
Sumner approached Cochecton because the county
posted limitations on two bridges near the site in the Town of Tusten
that ithad intended to use.
“We offered to give them a bond that would be used
to repair the roads after the project was completed,” Lord said.
“If they
impose a 10 ton limit, none of the home owners in the project would
be able to do any work on their properties,” he said. “A simple
dump truck is over 10 tons.”
Sumner representatives met last Monday with Cochecton
officials but nothing was resolved.
Weiden Lake Estates is located off CR 23 in the
Town of Tusten on property formerly by the Weiden family.
