New pastors
assigned to St. John the Evangelist
By TOM KANE
HONESDALE — On July 5, Father Martin Boylan was
appointed pastor and Father Bryan Wright assistant pastor of St.
John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale.
The appointments came from the Diocese of Scranton,
where 23 pastors and six assistant pastors were changed throughout
the diocese.
Father Kevin Mulhern, who had been pastor of St.
John’s for 25 years, was transferred to the Church of Saint Rose
of Lima in Carbondale.
Father Boylan, a native of Scranton, was transferred
from St. Rita’s/St. Anthony’s church. He was ordained 21 years ago.
Father Wright, a native of East Stroudsburg, had
been assistant pastor of St. John the Evangelist in Pittston. He
was ordained two years ago.
Father Boylan, who holds a Bachelors degree in
Sociology and a Masters in Social Work, taught at Notre Dame High
School in East Stroudsburg for several years, all of this before
entering the seminary.
“All of my experience comes together in parish
ministry,” Father Boylan said.
“We have one of the finest youth groups in the
diocese,” he said. “We have a group of very dedicated people who
are the type of people who appeal to young people.”
The group meets on Sunday evenings at the St. Vincent
DePaul School, he said.
The youth group runs a small engraving and T-shirt
business in Waymart. The profits go to charity, he said.
“It gives the youth a little taste of business
life to see if perhaps they’d like to do that,” Boylan said.
