Alternative
school to open
By TOM KANE
HONESDALE — A group of
parents calling themselves “People for Children’s Education” will
open an alternative school in the Honesdale area this September.
The group will begin with two grades: a full-day
kindergarten and a first grade.
“We’ll know in a few days exactly where the site
of the school will be,” said Emily Paulsen, one of the parents.
So far, 17 parents have expressing strong interest.
Twenty-five parents attended a meeting last week, she said.
“We want to have an alternative to the public school
and the religion-based academies,” Paulsen said.
The Homestead School, in Glen Spey,
NY, is similar, but it is too far for Pennsylvania people, she said.
Students from Sullivan County will be eligible
to attend, but bussing will be available only to Pennsylvania students,
said Paulsen.
Paulsen said parents like herself
were interested in giving their children more individualized instruction
with smaller class sizes than are typical in the public schools,
and with an emphasis on the arts and outdoor activities.
For more information, call Paulsen at 570/729-8682.
