BESSIE J. KARLSON
HONESDALE — Bessie J. Karlson
of Honesdale, a former LPN,
and Wayne County resident for most of her life, died
Friday, July 6, 2001 in Wayne Memorial Hospital. She
was 83.
Daughter of the late Grant and Mamie
Delbridge White, she was
born in Elk Lake. She was the widow of Axel Karlson.
She graduated from Waymart High School
in 1937. She was a member of the Honesdale Gospel
Tabernacle and was the most awarded AWANA leader where she served for 21 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail R.
Simmons and husband, Ernest of Honesdale; three sisters,
Dorothy Erk of Florida,
Lois Bunting of Prompton
and Thelma Hogencamp Polewski of Milwaukee,
WI; a granddaughter, Shirley Kille;
two grandsons, Colin Simmons and Lee Simmons; six
great-grandchildren. Arrangements will be announced.
SILVIN LINZER
MONTICELLO — Silvin
Linzer of Monticello, retired co-owner of the Aladdin Printing
Co. in Bridgeville and a lifelong area resident, died
Tuesday, July 3, 2001. She was 80.
Daughter of the late Max and Anna Miller,
she was born April 4, 1921.
She was a member and president of the
Ladies Auxiliary to the Jesse Brahms Post #209, Jewish
War Veterans in Monticello; a member of the Ladies
Auxiliary of Community General Hospital, the Landfield
Avenue Synagogue Hadassah and B’nai
B’rith.
Survivors include her husband, Julian
Linzer; two sons, Dr. Marc
R. of Tempe, AZ and Robert of Monticello; a sister,
Leatrice Grobman of Lake Worth,
FL; three granddaughters, Janine, Sara and Jessica;
and a grandson, Sage.
Graveside services and burial were held
at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello. Rabbi Ben
Zion Chanowitz officiated.

JOYCE MILLER
HONESDALE — Joyce Miller of Honesdale,
an elementary school teacher in New Jersey before
moving to Honesdale, later working at the Wayne County
Historical Society in Honesdale, died Thursday, July
5, 2001 at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in
Honesdale. She was 58.
Daughter of the late Michael and Julia
Grum Zawesky,
she was born October 10, 1942 in Carbondale.
She was a graduate of Forest City High
School and East Stroudsburg University. She was a
member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale
and a member of its Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration,
which she truly loved.
Survivors include
two sons, Christopher of Easton and Mark of Belvidere,
NJ; a daughter, Carol of Aspen, CO; a grandson and
a granddaughter.
A Memorial Service was celebrated at
St. Mary Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Cremation took place at Salem
Crematory in Archbald. Burial
will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Forest City.

RUTH ROSE & CHARLES E. SCHENCK
TULSA, OK — A
Memorial Service was held for Ruth Rose Schenck
and Charles E. Schenck at the United Methodist Church in Hawley,
Ruth Rose Schenck
of Tulsa, OK, former owner of Drake’s Tavern in Honesdale,
died Wednesday, May 20, 2001 in Tulsa, OK.
Daughter of the late Frank G. and Mary
Pulici Rose, she was born
in Hawley.
She was a noted basketball player at
Hawley High School and a member of its championship
team in 1947-48. She graduated in 1948. She was a
collector of cookbooks and her passion for Italian
cuisine was her hallmark. She delighted friends and
family with her talent.
Charles E. Schenck
of Tulsa, OK, a retired 37-year YUBA Corp. vice president
of production control in the management division,
died Tuesday, June 5, 1998 in Tulsa, OK.
Son of the late Raymond J. and Marjorie
Caruth Schenck,
he was born in Hawley.
He was a graduate of Hawley High School
in 1948. He attended the University of Pennsylvania
and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from
1943 to 1946. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge
305 in Hawley, later combined with the Masonic Lodge
218 F&AM in Honesdale.
He served on the Wayne County school board from 1957
to 1961; and was a scoutmaster of the Boy Scout Troop
in Hawley.
Ruth and Charles were married February
12, 1949 and resided in Tulsa since 1961. It was their
desire to wait for each other in death and be brought
home together to rest in Green Gates Cemetery with
their families.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond
and wife Nellie of Freeport, FL and Judson of Oklahoma;
a grandson, Tony and wife Donna of Pryor, OK; two
great-grandsons, Benjamin and Matthew; a great-granddaughter,
Carlista Jane; Mr. Schenck’s stepmother,
Kathryn Dwyer Schenck of
Hawley; his two sisters, Ruth McCabe of Binghamton,
NY and Leila Ballard of Hawley; Mrs. Schenck’s brother, Leonard Rose of Virginia; nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in
Hawley.
MARGARET J. MORGAN SEILER
HAWLEY — Margaret J. Morgan Seiler of
Hawley, a homemaker, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001
at the Julia Ribaudo Nursing
Home in Lake Ariel. She was 90.
Daughter of the late Marvin John and
Mary Helen Barrett Morgan, she was born in Hawley.
She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman
Catholic Church in Hawley.
Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn
of Hawley; a son, Richard J. of Hawley; three sisters,
Jeanne Morgan of Florida, Agnes Haggarty
of White Mills and Joan Pepper of Emporium; a granddaughter,
Rebecca Rose of Hawley; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three sisters,
Gertrude Spall, Catherine Bott and Alice
Morgan; and two brothers, Luis and James Morgan.
Services were held in Queen of Peace
R.C. Church in Hawley. The
Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial
was in the parish cemetery.

LILLIAN SHAROFF
MONTICELLO — Lillian Sharoff
of Monticello, a former secretary/bookkeeper for the
Royal Bus Company in Monticello founded by her father,
and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, June
28, 2001 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. She was
87.
Daughter of the late Hymen and Rose
Brown Rubin, she was born August 8, 1916 in Brooklyn.
She was the widow of Jacob “Jack” Sharoff, who was police chief for the Village of Monticello
for over 35 years.
She graduated from Monticello High School
in 1933 and attended secretarial school in Manhattan.
She also worked as assistant to the town clerk and
as a secretary/bookkeeper for the Monticello Raceway.
She was an active member of the Landfield
Avenue Synagogue, B’nai B’rith and Deborah; was a
lifetime member of Hadassah and was the recipient
of numerous awards earned for her tireless efforts
in that cause.
Survivors include a brother, Jack Rubin,
and wife, Sylvia of Albany; a sister, Mildred Pesche
Hocker of Monticello; two
sons, Leslie and wife Pamela Gilbert and Steven and wife Nancy Schwind,
all of Monticello; a granddaughter, Morgan Rose of
Monticello; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Joseph N.
Garlick Funeral Home in
Monticello. Burial was in the Landfield
Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello.
