School’s out, and many activities in the coming
week are geared for young people. Psst. Don’t tell them the attractions
are cultural and/or educational, and let the fun speak for itself.
An art show featuring the work of Narrowsburg students
opens at the Art Center of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, 37
Main Street, Narrowsburg on Wednesday, July 11, for a three-week
exhibit. Gallery Coordinator Elise Freda anticipates “something
quite special, as Barbara McPhail’s students always produce creative
and inventive work.” Call 845/252-7576 for further information.
Two puppeteers will be performing for the youngest
of the young set over the weekend. William K. Whispers brings his
magic—literally—to the Liberty Public Library on Saturday for a
free show (information at 845/292-6070), while Lydia Adams Davis,
also a singer-songwriter, entertains on Sunday at the Lumberland
Town Hall in Glen Spey as part of the Town of Lumberland Cultural
Series. Call 845/856-6372 for more about her show, “One Earth So
Green & Round.”
The July 14 concert of the 2001 Wildflower Music
Festival at the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary in White Mills,
PA, is especially appropriate for the musically curious. It’s a
learning experience as well as entertainment when The Turtle Island
String Quartet presents its eclectic blend of jazz, bluegrass, blues
and rock while showcasing the work of classical composers. Information
about the outdoor concert series is at 570/253-5500.
The Young Audience Festival at Forestburgh releases
the genie from the lamp in its original musical version of “Aladdin”
on July 12 and 14 and again on July 19 and 21 for six daytime performances.
Reserve tickets at 845/794-1194.
Drama of the historical sort visits Fort Delaware
once again as the 24th Connecticut Militia Regiment demonstrates
military life in the 18th century. Witness daily chores, cooking,
crafts and military drills on July 14 and 15 at the Museum of Colonial
History on Route 97, in Narrowsburg. Call 845/252-6660 for more
information.
July 15 is “Learn to Canoe” Day at Lander’s River
Trips. Beginners of all ages can enjoy the river, our greatest local
natural resource, secure in the knowledge acquired during this day
trip. Make reservations at 800/252-3925.
On July 18, artist and young person David Duke
delivers a lecture on animated film at the Sullivan County Museum,
in Hurleyville. Sponsored by the Catskill Art Society, the evening
includes student films presented by Larry Kassan. Call 845/436-4227
for details.
To the young, the formerly young and the young
at heart: enjoy the offerings.
Information about most of the above events appears
elsewhere in this issue of TRR. Questions about other local arts
activities? Call the DelawareValley Arts Alliance, your arts connection,
