MILDRED AMOR
HONESDALE — Mildred Amor
of Honesdale, a former genealogist at the Wayne County Historical
Society and a long time area resident, died Wednesday, June 27,
2001 at the Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was 73.
Daughter and last surviving member of the Percy
and Flora Lyons Amor family, she was born
June 22, 1928 in Philadelphia.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High School and
was a recipient of a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood
University. She attended St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Honesdale.
Survivors include five nieces, Mildred Sweeney of
Pittsburgh with whom she resided, Carole Muller of Washington DC,
Melodie Whiteley
of Rogers, AK, Margaret Banks of Honesdale and Mai Lei Harendza
of Dallas, TX; a grandniece and a grandnephew, both of Pittsburgh.
A memorial service was held at the Hessling
Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter,
pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial
was in the parish cemetery.

EDWARD F. BRADY
HONESDALE — Edward Brady of Honesdale, died unexpectedly
at home on Sunday, June 24, 2001. He was 82.
Son of Patrick and Bridget McMahon Brady he was
born March 3, 1919 in New York City.
He was a US Army and Navy veteran in World War II
and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Brady; a son,
Daniel and wife Ann of Honesdale; three grandchildren, Patrick,
Michael and Julia, all of Honesdale; step-sons Kevin O’Brien of
New Milford, NJ and John O’Brien of St. Cloud, FL; a brother, Stephen
of Niantic, CT and a sister, Mary McCarthy of Moonachie, NJ.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas, John
and Frederick.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary
Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Cremation followed at Maple
Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald.
GERTRUDE RASMUSSEN BRUECKNER
HONESDALE — Gertrude Rasmussen Brueckner
of Honesdale, died Friday, June 22, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale following a brief illness.
Daughter of the late Gus and Matilda Kenner Seifert,
she was born November 10, 1908 in Germany.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Wilsch
of Germany; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Ellen Rasmussen
Costello.
Following cremation, burial took place in Indian
Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.
RICHARD DOEINCK
ELDRED — Richard Doeinck
of Eldred, a retired aircraft mechanic for American Airlines and
a 26-year area resident, died Monday, June 25, 2001 at Valley Hospital
in Ridgewood, NJ. He was 80.
Son of Adolph and the late Leila Hasbrouck Doeinck, he was born September 29, 1920 in Liberty.
He joined the Liberty Fire Department at the age
of 17. He was a past officer, chief, president, fire commissioner
and 21-year member of the Melville Fire Department in Melville,
Long Island, NY. He was a 25-year member of the Yulan
Fire Department and the Yulan Fire Police; a lifetime member of the Excelsior Sportsman’s
Club, where he was on the board of directors; a member of the New
York Association of Fire Chiefs, a certified emergency medical technician;
and a member of the Highland Seniors.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Doeinck,
at home; two sons, Dennis of Liberty and Wayne of Mastic; a daughter,
Karen Wirth of Centereach; a sister, Alice
Jones of Eldred; and six grandchildren.
Services were held at Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Hone
in Barryville. Burial was private.

CATHERINE ADA HILL
HONESDALE — Catherine Ada
Hill of Honesdale, a retired administrator for the Traveler’s Insurance
Co. of Providence, RI, and a 10-year area resident, died unexpectedly
at home on Sunday, June 24, 2001. She was 77.
Daughter of the late Wentworth and Marion Parker
Hill, she was born in New York City.
Survivors include four nephews, Richard Ostrow
of Beach Lake, Thomas Ostrow of East Stroudsburg,
Michael Ostrow of Stanhope, NJ and Gene
Ostrow of Mt. Laurel, NJ; a niece, Maryann Stutzer of Mount Holly, NJ; a brother, Henry of Bergenfield,
NJ; nieces grandnieces and grandnephews.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be
announced.
GEORGE FREDERICK HOFFMAN, JR.
KITTY HAWK, NC — George Frederick Hoffman, Jr. of
Kitty Hawk, NC, a retired New York State Trooper and former resident
of the Narrowsburg area for 47 years, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001
in Sentara Barco
Nursing Home in North Carolina. He was 71.
Son of George Frederick, Sr. and Florence Veronica
Webb Hoffman, he was born December 18, 1929 in Monticello.
He was a US Navy veteran, serving as an engineman,
first class.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, at home; a daughter,
Alice Read of Malvern, PA; three sons, Charles Kinne
of White Lake, Phillip of Newburgh and Richard with the US Coast
Guard; and many siblings.
A graveside service took place in the Lava Cemetery
in Narrowsburg.

HELEN K. JURGENSEN
HAWLEY — Helen K. Jurgensen
of Woodloch Springs, Hawley, died unexpectedly at home on Monday,
June 25, 2001. She was 83.
Daughter of the late Garrett and Julia Duvalois
Kuiken, she was born May 11, 1918 in Paterson,
NJ.
She was a member of the Wyckoff Reformed Church
in Wykoff.
Survivors include a son, Charles and wife Wanda
of Honesdale; a daughter, Diane E. of Bristol, PA; six grandchildren;
a great-grandson; a brother, John D. Kuiken
of Midland Park, NJ; a sister, Gertrude Garratson
of Brick Township, NJ.
She was predeceased by a brother, Louis Kuiken.
Services were held in the Wyckoff Reformed Church.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

NEIL MAREE
MILANVILLE — Neil Maree of Milanville,
a heavy equipment operator and lifetime area resident, died Saturday,
June 30 at Wayne Memorial Hosptal.
He was 59.
The son of John Maree,
he was born October 7, 1941 in Jersey City, NJ.
Survivors include his wife, Majorie,
at home; his father of Fort Meyers, FL; five sons, Daron
of Beach Lake, Anthony of Honesdale, Dale of North Carolina, Wayne
of Smallwood and Warren of Milanville;
a daughter, Donna Dexter of Beach Lake; a brother, John; 11 grandchildren;
and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6
at 10:00 a.m., at Rasmussen & Sons Funeral Home, in Narrowsburg.
The Rev. William Rushik will officiate. Cremation will take place at the Twin
Tier Crematory in Endicott, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made
to the American Cancer Society, Ulster County Unit, 159 Green St.,
Kingston, NY 12401.
BORGHILD BETTY A. MATTHEWS
ROWLAND — Borghild Betty
A. (Magnussen) Matthews, a homemaker and 26-year area resident
of Rowland who formerly resided in North Port, FL and Garden City
Park, NY, died Saturday, June 30, 2001 following an illness. She
was 88.
Daughter of Carl and Josephine Magnussen,
she was born in Brooklyn, NY. She was the widow of Arthur Matthews.
She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church,
in Rowland; and Sons of Norway, Bernt
Balchen, 3/566 Chapter, where she served
as cultural director. She was a former member of the North Port
Lioness Club #7475.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Bright and
Carol Glass, both of Rowland; a son, Gene Matthews of North Port,
FL; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and
nephews.
Services will be held at the Bethel Lutheran Church
on Friday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Elwood E. Mather,
interim pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Rowland Cemetery.

GENE ANNE TITUS
MILFORD — Gene Anne Titus of Milford, a former tax
assessor for Pike County and a 50-year Milford resident, a descendent
of original Milford settler, George Buchanan, died Friday, June
29, 2001. She was 76.
Daughter of Harry and Eugenie M. O’Brien Buchanan,
she was born in Hackensack, NJ on July 22, 1925.
She was the granddaughter of Annie R. Buchanan,
founder of Cliff Park Inn and Golf Course. She worked in local real
estate for many years and was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in
Milford.
Survivors include a brother, Harry W. Buchanan III
and wife Barbara C.; six nieces and nephews; and cousin, Barbara
J. Buchanan.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Tuesday,
July 3, 2001 at St. Patrick’s Church in Milford. The Rev. Eugene
Gunning officiated. Burial was in Milford Cemetery in Dingman
Township.
LOUISE J. VANGORDER
HONESDALE — Louise J. Van Gorder
of Honesdale, died unexpectedly at home Wednesday, June 27, 2001.
She was 78.
Daughter of the late Louis and Marie Akerman,
she was born in Dom Basle sur Muerthe,
France.
She was a member of the Honesdale Congregation of
Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include her husband, Duane M. Van Gorder; two daughters, Desiree M. Olver
of Beach Lake and Audrey L. Zarkoski of
St. Charles, MO; four grandchildren; a sister, Marie Therese of
Montigny les Metz, France; and a brother,
Raymond Akerman of Nancy, France.
A memorial talk was given by Elder George Eroh
from the Honesdale Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Burial was
in the Beach Lake Cemetery.
