A trip down memory lane

By HELENE LUNING INDELICATO

On behalf of the Class of 1956, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Joey Hawker, the “All School Reunion Committee” and the volunteers who made the trip down memory lane on June 23 and 24 possible.

The weekend started with the final graduation from Narrowsburg Central School on Friday evening where 17 students received their diplomas. How proud it felt to be an alumnus of NCS as the graduates received their awards for their years of achievement—with nine of the 17 students being members of the National Honor Society. Certainly, a glowing tribute to the educators of NCS.

The Saturday open house and evening events will long be remembered. Walking down the halls of our alma mater, visiting the classrooms where we once studied and laughed, and sometimes cried, visualizing our teachers and class advisors standing in front of the room and preparing us for our future, recalling with fellow classmates incidents experienced while we were students, exchanging family photos, the excitement at meeting friends whom we haven’t seen since graduating from school, watching the slide presentation, and finally singing our Alma Mater evoked emotions in all of us that are difficult to put into words. I guess the hugs and tears say it all.

The gathering on Lander’s field on Sunday afternoon was the “icing on the cake.” The relaxed atmosphere, the opportunity to have more than a fleeting moment to once again visit with friends we may never meet again, and to see their children and grandchildren, will only add to our wonderful memories of this weekend.

As we reflect on the weekend activities, on behalf of the Class of `56, I would like to pay special tribute to Ethel Poley and Edward Hulihan, our class advisors, who played a most important role in molding the character and direction of our class by guiding us through our high school years. They provided us with their support and the motivation to excel and be all that we could be. They were our mentors and our friends. It is with utmost respect and admiration that we offer this public acknowledgment.

Nearly 1,000 people filled the Narrowsburg gym on June 23 where there were tables filled with memorabilia from each graduating class. The highlight of the day was a multi-media slide show entitled “Digital Year Book.” Organizers contacted class liasons via regular mail, phone and e-mail. “We had no idea how many people would show up,” Tom Nuttycombe, a Sullivan West-Narrowsburg elementary teacher said. The overwhelming response exceeded the committee’s expectations. (Click for larger image)

I would be remiss if I failed to mention our Principal, Roy V. Sullivan, who directed the course of Narrowsburg Central School from its infancy to the day he retired. Mr. Sullivan was a person who appeared larger than life as we passed through the portals of NCS but he prepared us to face the trials and tribulations of the world by instilling in us important values, discipline and respect toward one another.

Again, we express our thanks and gratitude to everyone who helped make this weekend so enjoyable—Joey Hawker, the committee, the volunteers and the alumni who traveled great distances to help make it a success.

In our hearts, Narrowsburg Central School will live on forever! `Til we meet again!
