VIRGINIA FLEDERBACH BATTEN

HONESDALE — Virginia Flederbach Batten of Honesdale, a retired employee of the former Katz Underwear Company in Honesdale, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 90.

Daughter of the late William and Mabel Burkhouse Flederbach, she was born April 2, 1911 in Honesdale and resided at the family homestead on Riverside Drive in Honesdale for all of her life. She was the widow of Robert W. Batten.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and was particularly fond of her heritage to St. Mary Magdalen’s Church and was a member of the Parish Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include two sons, James and wife Patricia and Thomas and wife Karen, both of Honesdale; a sister, Sr. Mary Rene Flederbach RSM of Dallas, PA; five grandchildren, Lori Nicolni, Craig Batten, Aimee Gallagher, Brian Batten and Sean Batten; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Robert; and two sisters, Gertrude Horst and Mildred Shute.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Mary Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

PATRICIA ANN KELLY BROWN

HAWLEY — Patricia Ann “Patty” Kelly Brown of Hawley, co-owner of Brown’s Pharmacy, a lifelong Hawley resident, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at Mercy Hospice in Scranton. She was 63.

Daughter of the late Patrick J. and Florence Alpha Kelly, she was born in Hawley.

She was a member of the Hawley High School Class of 1954; a member of the Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley and its Altar and Rosary Society; the Hawley Merchants and the Hawley-Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce; and volunteered at the Library, Ambulance and Fire Department, all of Hawley.

Survivors include her husband, John Brown; five daughters, Patricia Ann McHugh and husband Michael of East Stroudsburg, Margaret Frey and husband David of Northampton, Bonnie Gumble and husband Todd of Lake Ariel, Stephanie Brown of Hawley, Kathleen Johnson and husband Thomas of East Stroudsburg; two sons, John and wife Maureen of Hawley, Christopher and wife Dee of Mt. Joy; a sister, Kathleen Norton of Fort Myers, FL; a brother, Robert Kelly of Walden, NY; three grandsons, Michael McHugh, Cole Gumble, and Sean Brown; three granddaughters, Katie and Jackie McHugh and Brianna Brown.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Shawn McHugh.

Services were held at Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

LOUIS C. FALLAR

COCHECTON — Louis C. Fallar of Cochecton, a retired bus driver for the New York City Transit Authority, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital in Callicoon. He was 73.

Son of the late Louis and Henrietta Lynch Fallar, Sr., he was born July 10, 1927 on Staten Island. He was the widower of Janice Fischer Fallar.

He was a member of the Catskill Detachment of the Marine Corps League; and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana of Spotswood, NJ and Cynthia Fallar-Garay of Brooklyn; a brother, Robert of Staten Island; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Huntington. The Rev. Tom Jones officiated. Burial was in the Fosterdale Cemetery.

HAZEL LEE GODDARD

HONESDALE — Hazel Lee Goddard of Honesdale, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale where she had been a resident since 1997. She was 91.

Daughter of Walter and Ellen Holloway Meek, she was born November 25, 1900 in Wayne, OK while it was Oklahoma Territory. She was the widow of Dr. Cranston Earl Goddard.

She attended Phillips University in Enid, OK and married a fellow student, Cranston Earl Goddard who became a Presbyterian minister. Throughout their married life they lived in Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Panama Canal Zone and Swarthmore, PA. She was active all of her life in church affairs and in PEO in recent years and lived in Murray-Tufts Manor near Beach Lake for five years.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Clifford Ammerman of Bethany; a sister, Doris Counts of Penn Valley, CA; four grandchildren, Jane Wasman, Jo McGarvey, Mark Ammerman and Kristen Ammerman; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a niece; great-nephews and great-nieces.

Services were private.

LOUISE M. ROSE HAZEN

PHILLIPSBURG — Louise M. Rose Hazen of Phillipsburg, NJ, formerly of Hawley, died Friday, June 10, 2001 at the Care Center of Brakeley Park in Phillipsburg. She was 85.

Daughter of Henry C. and Alma Bea Rose, she was born in Hawley. She was the widow of Raymond J. Hazen.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hawley and was in the Ladies Aid and the choir. She had also been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville. She was active in the PP&L Wives’ Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy H. Roseberry of Phillipsburg and Sandra M. Kiesling of Alamagordo, NM; a son, R. Joseph of Mt. Bethel; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hawley. The Rev. David Heckler, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

JOHN L. FRITSCH, JR.

HONESDALE — John L. Fritsch, Jr. of Honesdale, a helicopter pilot at Saber Cargo Airline in Charlotte, NC, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 from injuries sustained when a civilian aircraft he was flying crashed near Winchester, WV.

Son of Betty Lou Mader of Honesdale and the late John L. Fritsch, Sr., he was born in Honesdale.

He was a 1979 graduate of Honesdale High School. After completing Army jump school, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Combat Infantry Division and was with them when the division was sent to Panama. In 1982 he was named the airborne division’s “Soldier of the Quarter.” On April 4, 1985 he was awarded his wings and promoted to warrant officer at Fort Rucker, AL. After leaving the Army in 1989 he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard where he flew a Cobra attack helicopter in the Delta Troop, 1st Battalion. He recently attained the highest W4 rank. He was a member of the Rileyville Rod and Gun Club

Survivors include his wife, Victoria S. Frindt Murray Fritsch; a daughter, Jacilyn M. Fritsch, at home; a stepson, CJ Murray of UT; a step-daughter, Julie Murray of Honesdale; three brothers, Donald of Lake Ariel, Richard of Fresno, CA and Scott of Waukesha, WI; a sister, Tammy Fritsch of Beach Lake; maternal grandmother, Thelma Hogencamp Polewski of Waukesha; paternal grandparents, Marjorie and Alexander Fritsch of Honesdale; a niece and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Clarence Hogencamp.

Military services were held at the Texas No. 4 Fire Company in Honesdale. Cremation followed.

LUDMILLA KOSTIUK

GLEN SPEYLudmilla Kostiuk of Glen Spey, a retired bookkeeping clerk and 18-year area resident, died Friday, June 15, 2001 at home. She was 75.

Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sava Tymczyk, she was born January 22, 1926 in the Ukraine.

She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Glen Spey where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Sisterhood of the Church and the Ukrainian Women’s Association.

Survivors include her husband, Jurij George Kostiuk of Glen Spey.

Services were held at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Glen Spey. The Rev. Nestor Kowal officiated. Burial was in St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Cemetery in So. Bound Brook, NJ.

MADELINE V. LEFFER

DELRAY BEACH — Madeline V. Leffer of Delray Beach, FL, a former resident of Monticello and former co-owner of Roark’s Tavern, died May 25, 2001. She was 87.

Daughter of the late William and Anna Karlberg McGuigan, she was born September 1, 1913.

Survivors include her husband, Clement of Delray Beach; a son, Martin of Woodstock; a daughter, Jeanne Leffer Welch of Jerome, AZ; and two grandsons, Asa Nathan and Forrest Leffer.

Graveside services and burial were held May 30 at the Palm Beach Memorial Park in Florida.

AGNES MARTINETTI

COCHECTON — Agnes Martinetti of Cochecton, a retired office manager, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at home. She was 93.

Daughter of the late Ferdinand and Loretta Carchietta, she was born March 6, 1908 in the Bronx. She was the widow of Patrick Martinetti, Sr.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church in Lake Huntington.

Survivors include a son, Patrick J., Jr. and wife Penni of Cochecton; two sisters, Helen Russo and Mildred Bastone, both of the Bronx; a grandson, Daniel; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial were held at the Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cochecton Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Lake Huntington Fire Department, both at Lake Huntington, NY 12752.

KATHLEEN GALLAGHER PELTONEN

FAWN LAKE FOREST — Kathleen Gallagher Peltonen of Fawn Lake Forest, a 12-year area resident, died Friday, June 15, 2001 in Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was 54.

Daughter of the late Michael and Phyllis Shanley Gallagher, she was born in Brooklyn, NY.

She was a member of Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley.

Survivors include her husband, Taplo Peltonen of Hawley; two daughters, Jeanette Owen of Bethlehem, PA and Tracy at home; a son, John at home; a grandson, Daniel; a granddaughter, Jessica; two sisters, Barbara Gallagher and Diane Hodowanec, both of Philadelphia; two brothers, Michael and James, both of Philadelphia; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

ELIZABETH A. ZAPP

HONESDALE — Elizabeth A. Zapp of Honesdale, a former private duty nurse and a teacher in Child Evangelism Fellowship of Wayne and Pike Counties, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was 85.

Daughter of the late Harry and Bessie Bemner Leishman, she was born July 17, 1915 in Rochester, NY. She was the widow of Elmer Zapp.

She graduated from Dunmore High School in 1933 and received her nursing degree from the Westside Hospital School of Nursing in Scranton in 1936. She was a member of the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle.

Survivors include three daughters, Jayne Elizabeth Caldwell and husband David of Kent, OH and Ruth A. Fritsch of Honesdale; a son, Charles Craig and wife Nancy of St. Leonard, MD; a sister, Jane Sutton; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, James Leishman; three grandchildren, Caldwell infant twins and Private Mark Fritsch.

A memorial service was held at the Gospel Tabernacle. Rev. Paul Williamson officiated.

A private graveside service was held at Glen Dyberry Cemetery.
