Fandrews:
not just a racehorse
By MARY GREENE
NARROWSBURG — “People coming off the river don’t
want to dine,” said Tom Sellars. “They
want to eat.”
Sellars and his wife,
Nancy Saccone-Alaire, run the newly re-opened Fandrews
Restaurant adjoining Landers Motel on Route 97. It’s a family affair:
their son, Jacques, tends bar and their daughter, Tomi,
11, helps with bussing tables.
The restaurant features casual lunch and dinner
fare such as hamburgers, a veggie burger, chicken, salads, soups,
daily specials and a “fabulous NY strip steak for $12.99,” said
Sellars. The dining room is light and
airy. The restaurant serves beer and wine. Desserts are homemade
by Saccone-Alaire.
The restaurant received its unusual name after
a racehorse owned by Saccone-Alaire. The
horse is stabled in Monticello and frequently races at Monticello
Raceway.
“I spend all my mornings in the barn,” said Saccone-Alaire. “Otherwise, I’d be hard to live with.”
How does Fandrews do
at the raceway?
“He’s my pet,” said Saccone-Alaire.
“It doesn’t matter how he does.”
Fandrews is currently
open Thursday through Sunday for lunch and dinner, from 11:00 a.m.
until 10:00 p.m. In July, the restaurant will be open seven days
a week. Beginning June 28, every Thursday night will be Mexican
night, serving chimichingas, fajitas and
burritos along with the regular menu.
“We are hoping more people from the area will come
in and try us,” said Sellars. “We welcome
local business. And we are very family friendly.”
