Rue earns awards at Ithaca

MONTICELLO – Carolina Rue, 21, of Monticello, to be a senior at Ithaca College next fall, was the recipient of three academic honors this year. A 1998 graduate of Monticello High School, Rue was notified last week that she will receive a financial award from the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in the State of New York at a ceremony to be held at Grand Lodge headquarters in New York City in July.

“The Masons of New York congratulate you and wish you continued success as you work toward the completion of your degree,” wrote James E. Sullivan of Lockport, chairman of the Masonic Education Assistance Program Committee.

A second merit scholarship to Rue this year will come from the Duncan Hines Foundation, according to David L. Dresser, associate dean of Ithaca College.

Rue also brought home a Certificate of Achievement from her college, “for exemplary academic performance” as evidenced by maintaining a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

Majoring in Exercise Science, Rue will pursue a career in athletics training or sports medicine. This summer, she is completing an internship through the college.

She is the daughter of Carmen and Thomas Rue of Monticello.

Brother and sister receive scholarship

ELDRED — Rebecca and Robert Sparling, seniors attending Eldred High School, have each been awarded a scholarship by Citizens Communications. Since the program’s inception in 1954, more than 500 relatives of Citizens employees have received scholarships through the Citizens Scholarship Fund.

Rebecca and Robert were selected to receive the scholarship for their high academic records, success potential and leadership abilities. Other considerations included honors, work experience, school and community participation and an appraisal from a school administrator or civic leader.

The Citizens Scholarship Fund is designed to assist with the education of children, stepchildren and grandchildren of Citizens employees. Winners receive $1,000 for each of four years and are eligible to work at a Citizens Communications office during summer vacation.

Rebecca and Robert are the children of Sharon and Dave Sparling. Dave was a communications technician at Citizens Communications Port Jervis office and retired on June 1. Both Rebecca and Robert will attend Marywood University in Scranton.
