New spin
on an old expression
By KRISTA GROMALSKI
MILFORD — True to its name, the newly opened Reigning
Cats and Dogs makes it possible for area pet owners to treat their
furry ones like a king or queen. The store, located in The Old Lumberyard
Shops, saw its grand opening celebration on June 15. It’s
owners are mother and daughter team Ellyne
Miller and Laurie Anderson.
Featured among its wares are items for the adventurous
animal such as pet-sized life jackets, backpacks and travel food
bags. For those leading a life of leisure, there are canine log
cabins and gourmet treats.
Miller and Anderson, along with family and pets,
moved to the area from Metuchen, NJ about one year ago. The creation
of the store, said Anderson, happened quickly.
She and her mother, who each have two dogs and
two cats, missed those “wonderful [pet] stores” they left behind
and thought, “Why not try it here?”
The inventory includes chest carry packs for smaller
pets, collars, beds, odd-sized harnesses and even metal garden sculptures
shaped like dogs and cats.
“A lot of our items are breed
specific,” Anderson said.
The Pike County Humane Society will be at the store
on Saturday, June 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to showcase pets
available for adoption. Anderson said she and her mother will donate
five percent of the day’s sales at Reigning Cats & Dogs to the
humane society.
