The
gift of culture
NARROWSBURG — Right now, there are Asian, Italian
and Polish high school students dreaming about America.
They have chosen to come to the United
States on the Academic Year in
America (AYA) program, and are anxiously
awaiting their arrival this August.
When Narrowsburg families welcome an AYA
student into their home for five or 10 months, they give the gift
of culture to their household. They can also develop a close tie
to someone who genuinely wants to experience their way of life.
AYA international students are eager to
know about the U.S.;
they want to see America
through the eyes of a Narrowsburg resident, not a tourist.
AYA is a not-for-profit
organization founded in 1981 with the assistance of late Senator
Robert F. Kennedy and sponsored by the American Institute for Foreign
Study (AIFS) Foundation. AYA sponsors students
from more than 30 countries. These bright young “ambassadors” arrive
with full medical insurance, their own spending money, solid academic
records and English skills.
In addition to the tremendously rewarding experience
of helping make someone’s dream come true, Narrowsburg families
can earn up to $1,000 toward any number of travel abroad programs
sponsored by AIFS. For more information on hosting an international exchange
student, contact Danielle Carpino at 800/322-HOST,

Stepping
up to Old Glory
BARRYVILLE — Students
at Step by Step Early Learning Center in were visited recently by
Philomae Donovan, an auxiliary member
of the VFW Post 5635 in Lackawaxen. Donovan
gave a presentation to the three and four year olds on the American
flag.
The preschoolers listened attentively as Donovan
explained the history of the flag, why it was created, what the
star and stripes represent and how the flag has changed through
our country’s history. She explained to the children about the days
that our country has set aside to honor the flag and what a special
symbol it is when we honor our country’s veterans on Memorial Day
and our entire country on July fourth.
The children were delighted to show Donovan how
they have been learning their Pledge of Allegiance all year long.
At the end of the presentation, Donovan gave each of the preschoolers
their own American flag to keep. Teacher Jeanne McKean was impressed
with how much the children took in and the new importance the flag
held for each of the preschoolers after the program.
