The view
from the Front Porch
By CHRIS CONROY
WHITE LAKE — Yet another new business has opened
on the 17B corridor. This time the beauty of antiques is blended
with the flavor of good food.
On May 24, The Front Porch opened its doors to
the public. For the past five months, owners Allan and Ina Wakstein
have been pulling double-duty, working their regular jobs in New
York City and finishing up renovations on the former single-family
Victorian that is now the antique shop and café on 17B, near the
Bradstan Country Inn.
“It’s been hard work,” Allan said, as he surveyed
the room full of people gathered for the opening. “But it all seems
worth it.”
The opening of The Front Porch, combined with other
recently opened businesses like Buster’s Barbecue and The Simply
Irresistible Boutique, is an example of the changing business climate
in the Town of Bethel. “This is a very good time for the town,”
said Bethel Supervisor Alan Scott shortly after he cut the ribbon
and welcomed the new business to town.
Featuring three rooms of antiques, and art by local
artists in a fourth room and throughout the house, just about everything
is for sale at The Front Porch. “We’re selling the art on consignment,”
Allan said, “and we’re not quite done getting in all the antiques
yet.”
The food at The Front Porch includes healthy fare
such as “energy wrap” sandwiches, gourmet soups and, of course,
coffee, tea and other beverages. “Ina’s been cooking for years,”
Allan said as visitors ate and chatted away at the handful of tables
in the main room. “This is like a dream come true for her.”
Right now, the hours of operation are experimental,
the Waksteins say. They are planning on a five-day week, generally
open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. “That may change, though,” said
Allan. It is recommended to call to get the most up-to-date hours,
as well as information about any special events. The number is 845/583-4838.
