Heyn
completes wilderness course
LANDER, WY — Emma Heyn, of Damascus, a Honesdale
High School graduate, completed a 65-day semester in Kenya with
the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) last fall.
While tourists in Africa often just see a small
portion of this land, a NOLS semester in Kenya is a complete immersion.
This expedition style course sees Kenya as few others see it. As
part of the students’ well-rounded education, they hiked to the
tops of the highest peaks of the country and explored the underwater
world of the Kenyan coast. Also, the students discovered Kenya’s
wildlife, people and wilderness. The students learned basic Kiswahili
so they could communicate with the people they encountered. Classes
discussed wildlife observation and avoidance, leadership techniques,
teamwork and communication.
Founded in 1965 by legendary mountaineer Paul Petzoldt,
the NOLS is the leader in wilderness education and sets the industry
standard for safe, high quality educational expeditions. The school
runs 10-day to semester-length courses for people aged 14 to over
70 in the Rocky Mountains, Pacific Northwest, Southwest, Alaska,
Western Canada, Mexico, Patagonia (Chile), India, Australia and
Kenya. College credit and scholarships are available. For more information
call NOLS at 307/332-5300 or visit www.nols.edu.
