NARROWSBURG — Narrowsburg will name its Litterpluck Champ 2001 at an awards assembly and barbecue on May 5. A handsome one-of-a kind trophy, pictured above, fashioned by renowned area artist Frank Holmes, will be awarded to the person who picks up the most amount of litter by 3:00 p.m. on that day. The Closing Awards Barbecue will be held at the United Methodist Church on Lake Street. Additional awards will be given for most unusual single object, most recyclable object found, vintage trash and most useful trash found.

The contest has begun and anyone wishing to participate can pick up an official litterpluck cleanup bag available at the Tusten Town Hall and the Tusten-Cochecton Branch Library.

The contest is being sponsored by the Narrowsburg Beautification Group, a competitor in the county-wide Sullivan Renaissance beautification initiative. Sullivan Renaissance is sponsoring a 30-participant contest for best community beautification, with a first prize of $20,000 and a second-place award of $10,000.

“We’re going to landscape the municipal parking lot by the library as our primary project. But we are looking encourage the planting of ornamental flowering trees along major roadways and on suitable areas throughout town. We also plan to help residents plant flower gardens using mature lavender plants. It is expected that the lavender plants will be in full bloom for the contest judging on August 3-5 weekend,” said Laurie Stuart, president of the Narrowsburg Chamber of Commerce, one of the groups participants.

Interested residents can sign up for the cleanup and learn more about the Narrowsburg Beautification effort at the Tusten Cochecton Library during library hours, or by meeting in front of the library between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on May 5. For more information call 845/252-3360.
