MARY V. BORNSTEIN
VERO BEACH, FL — Mary V. Bornstein of Vero Beach,
FL, retired owner of the Grandview Inn boarding house in Yulan,
died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at home. She was 99.
She was born January 6, 1902 in Poland.
She was a Gold Star Mother and a member of the Ladies
Auxiliary of the American Legion; a member of the Yulan Fire Department
Ladies Auxiliary and a benefactor of St. Anthony’s Church in Yulan.
Survivors include three sons, Joe Oset of Niagara
Falls, Stanley Oset of Jacksonville, FL and Chester Oset of Yulan;
14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony’s
Church in Yulan. The Rev. Evan Greco officiated. Burial was in the
parish cemetery.

MYRTHA G. BROWN
LIVINGSTON MANOR — Myrtha G. Brown of Livingston
Manor, a retired teacher at Roscoe Central School and a 35-year
area resident, died Wednesday, April 18. 2001. She was 64.
Daughter of the late Thomas Connell and Hazel Withal,
she was born November 29, 1936 in West Rutland, VT. She was the
widow of Frank E. Brown.
She was a member of the United Church of Roscoe
Happy Footers Sqare Dance Club in Youngsville; New York State Teachers
Union; Sullivan Chapter #298 Order of the Eastern Star; and the
Twin Village Golf Club in Roscoe. She graduated from Castleton State
College in Castleton, VT and had taught elementary education for
over 30 years prior to her retirement.
Survivors include a son, Frank E., Jr. and wife
Terry of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Edward Witham of Rutledge,
VT and Arthur Witham of West Rutland, VT; five sisters, Patricia
Tarabochi, Lee Romeo and Lois Workman, all of Rutland, VT, Alta
Johnston of Ira, VT and Josephine Clifford of West Yarmouth, MA;
two grandchildren, Erica and Matthew Brown; nieces and nephews.
Services were held in the United Church of Roscoe.
The Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery,
Center Rutland, VT.

JEFFREY T. BROWN
LIVINGSTON MANOR — Jeffrey T. Brown of Livingston
Manor, a custodian of Livingston Manor Central School and a lifelong
area resident, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001. He was 35.
Son of the late Frank E. and Myrtha Witham Brown,
he was born June 7, 1965 in Bennington, VT.
He was president of the Livingston Manor Nonteaching
Union and a member of the United Church of Roscoe and Twin Village
Golf Club in Roscoe.
Survivors include a brother, Frank E., Jr. and wife
Terry of Charlotte, NC; a niece, Erica Brown and a nephew, Matthew
Brown; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held in the United Church of Roscoe.
The Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen
Cemetery, Center Rutland, VT.

JOAN B. BLACK HANSEN
HONESDALE — Joan B. Black Hansen of Honesdale, a
lifelong area resident, died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at the Moses
Taylor Hospital in Scranton. She was 54.
Daughter of the late Edwin E. Black and Alviena
Patten Black of Carley Brook, she was born August 19, 1946 in Honesdale.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High School. She
volunteered as an EMT with the Honesdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
She was an active member of the Carley Brook United Methodist Church
and served as the organist.
Survivors include her husband, James A. Hansen;
her mother Alviena; two daughters, Melissa Rickard, RN of Honesdale
and Melinda at home; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, William E. Black.
A memorial service was held. The Rev. Paul McCauley,
pastor of Carley Brook United Methodist Church, officiated. Cremation
took place at the Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald. Burial
was in the East Dyberry Cemetery in Dyberry Township.

ELSIE VANIDERSTINE
CALLICOON — Elsie VanIderstine of Callicoon, a retired
nurse at Callicoon Hospital, and a longtime area resident, died
Sunday, April 15, 2001 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. She was
92.
Daughter of the late Rev. Wilfred and Anna Augusta
Smith VanIderstine, she was born November 22, 1908 in Wallington,
NJ.
A 1929 graduate of the Brooklyn Methodist-Episcopal
Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, she became head nurse upon
the opening of the Callicoon Hospital in 1931, owned and operated
by the late Dr. George R. Mills. After that hospital closed she
worked at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital
until retirement. Recently it became necessary to move to Schenectady
to be with her family.
She was a member of the Callicoon United Methodist
Church, the United Methodist Women of the Church, the Delaware Valley
Senior Citizens and the Grover Hermann Hospital Auxiliary, all in
Callicoon.
Survivors include nephews, Robert Miller and wife
Eleanor of Palmyra, VA; Wilfred Stabler and wife Karen of Middletown,
NY, Richard VanIderstine, Jr. and wife Linda of Voorheesville, NY,
Garry and Roger VanIderstine of Dormansville, NY and Wilfred VanIderstine
and wife Rene of Dormansville, NY; three nieces, her caregiver Risu
VanIderstine of Schenectady, NY; Sharon VanIderstine of Dormansville,
NY and Denise Irizarry of Coxsackie, NY; brother-in-law, Cain Stabler
and wife Ella of Middletown, a sister-in-law, Bernice VanIderstine
of Voorheesville; 11 grandnieces and grandnephews, nine great-grandnieces
and great-grandnephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Richard VanIderstine;
and two sisters, Emelyn Miller and Edith Stabler.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral
Home in Callicoon. The Rev. Steven Knutsen officiated. Burial was
in the Callicoon Cemetery.
