Internet,
video research materials
HURLEYVILLE — The sponsor of the 2001 competition
for the Ruth Cook Hamilton Essay Award among Sullivan County junior
and senior high school students is urging those who enter to utilize
the expanded Internet materials available, as well as the video
and audio tape resources at the Frederick A. Cook Collection in
the Sullivan County Museum.
“We have several tapes in lengths of 10 minutes
to two hours, which deal with Polar exploration and the field experiences
of Dr. Frederick A. Cook,” said Patricia Burns, curator of the collection.
Burns also said that an Internet directory of resources that deal
with Cook is available.
Each year the Frederick A. Cook Society offers
a $500 scholarship named after Cook’s eldest daughter. Cook, who
was born in Hortonville in 1865 and died in 1940, was an explorer,
scientist, author and physician. He was the first American Polar
explorer to winter in both Polar regions and is credited by many
authorities and researchers as being the first to reach the North
Pole in 1908.
Deadline for the essay submission is May 15. Interested
students should consult their guidance counselor or call Burns at
845/434-8044.
Girl
Scouts set out on adventures
SULLIVAN COUNTY — Two local girls have accepted
the opportunity to represent New York State, Sullivan County and
the Hudson Valley/Catskill regions at National Girl Scout Wider
Opportunities, formulated to give girls in junior or senior high
school broadening experiences. Participants have the chance to travel,
to learn about other cultures and to meet individual and group challenges.
In order to participate in a Wider Opportunity,
a girl must submit an application, go through an interview process
and submit references attesting to her maturity, knowledge, skills
and interest in the event’s focus. While most Wider Opportunities
receive hundreds of applicants from girls in both the USA and overseas,
the majority of Wider Opportunities accept only a choice, few participants
from these applicants.
Larissa Arnaboldi, of Grahamsville, a Senior Girl
Scout from Troop 450 and a sophomore at Tri-Valley Central School,
has been accepted to attend “Juliette Low Camp 2001,” in Kansas
City, Missouri.
This National Wider Opportunity will give 34 girls,
ages 16 to 17, the opportunity to train with special educational
professionals and work with them to prepare to care for children
with disabilities at a summer camp. Arnaboldi will give disabled
children summer camp memories, helping them with dressing, feeding,
personal care and transportation (wheelchair power) and ensuring
they get to swim, play and sing.
Erin Simpson, of Liberty, a Senior Girl Scout from
Troop 450, and a student at Liberty High School, has been accepted
to attend “2001: A Shore Odyssey,” in Lakewood, New Jersey. This
event is being hosted by the Ocean County Council of Girl Scouts,
Toms River.
This National Wider Opportuntiy will introduce
80 girls, ages 15 to 18, to the fresh and salt water environments
of the New Jersey shore. Participants will visit the Marine Science
Consortium at Sandy Hook, Cattus Island, Wharton State Forest, Barnegat
Bay, Philadelphia, Ellis Island and New York City.
The Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council is a not-for-profit
agency serving 9,349 girls and adults in a three-county area: Orange
and Sullivan Counties in New York and Pike County in Pennsylvania.
