JOHN JAMES ANNABLE
HAWLEY — John James Annable of Hawley, a retired
lineman for PP&L, died Saturday, April 7 at home after an extended
battle with cancer.
Birth son of the late Edgar J. and Effie Solomon
Annable, he was born in Archbald, PA.
He was an active member of the Anthracite Golf Association
for eight years, where he was a member of the executive committee
and the sole tournament director. He also served on the course rating
committee and the USGA committee. He was an active member of the
Honesdale Golf Club.
Survivors include Ruth Segal of Tafton, whom he
was raised by and whom he considered to be his mother; his former
wife, Betty Grundmann of Bohemia; a daughter, Kathleen Carachilo
of Hawley; a son, Jack of White Mills; two sisters, Marie Paterson
of West Haven, CT and Carol Pillar of Tafton; a brother, William
Beilman of Lawton, OK; five grandchildren; and a faithful friend,
Glenn Austin.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Edgar and William.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April
21, at 11:00 a.m., at the Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church,
in Hawley. The Rev. Michael H. Marchetti of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church
will officiate. Cremation will be at the H.G. Crematory, in Stroudsburg.

DOROTHY I. BARBUTI
DELAND, FL — Dorothy I. Barbuti of Deland, FL, a
homemaker and former Sullivan County resident, died Monday, April
2, 2001 at home. She was 57.
Daughter of Leonia Kuttner, she was born in the
Bronx.
She was a member of the Central Florida Corvair
Club.
Survivors include her husband, James Barbuti at
home; two sons, James of Otisville and Frank of Lake Mary, FL; three
daughters, Emeley Nicholson of Walden, Yvonne Decker of Maybrook
and Patricia Barbuti of Orange City, FL; her mother of Lew Beach;
a brother, Frank Kuttner of Livingston Manor; two sisters, Mary
Joe Rampe of Livingston Manor and Stephanie Brown of Clinton; 10
grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Jacquelynne Edwards.
Services were held in Deland, FL. Burial was in
Deland Memorial Gardens.
GENE CROSS COMPTON
HONESDALE — Gene Cross Compton of Honesdale, a former
auditor of Wayne County from 1982 until 1990, died Tuesday, April
3, 2001. She was 81.
Daughter of Harry and Myrtle James Cross, she was
born in Cherry Ridge. She was the widow of Russell Compton.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High School class
of 1936 and the Wayne Commercial School. She was a member of the
Bethany Presbyterian Church; a charter member of the Wayne County
Business and Professional Women’s Club; a member of the Women’s
Club of Honesdale; and Past Noble Grand of Violet Rebekah Lodge
#119.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail Goodenough and
husband Howard, Jr.; two grandsons, Steven Martin and wife Karen;
and Forest Goodenough and wife Stacey; and a sister, Charlotte Maloney.
She was predeceased by a sister, Cordelia Cross.
Private services were held at the convenience of
the family. A memorial service was held at the Bethany Presbyterian
Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bethany Presbyterian
Church or the Dessin Animal Shelter.
FRANK FELLER
BETHEL — Frank Feller of Bethel, a retired bus dispatcher
for the Manhattan, Bronx Surface Transit Co. and a longtime area
resident, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at the Columbia Hospital
in West Palm Beach, FL. He was 86.
Son of the late Hyman and Gertrude Weinstein Feller,
he was born February 25, 1915 in the Bronx.
He was a member of the Fallsburg Lodge of Free and
Accepted Masons, the Shriners Lodge and the International Order
of Odd Fellows.
Survivors include his wife, Reene Kleinberg Feller
at home; a daughter, Alice Sionsky and husband Howard of Garnerville;
a son, Howard and wife Anna of North Carolina; a brother, Rubin
of White Lake; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces
and nephews.
He was predeceased by two daughters, Rosalyn Weissler
and Trudy Thompson.
Services were held at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral
Home in Monticello. Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum officiated. Burial was
in the Temple Beth-El Cemetery in Bethel.

ALBERT H. HAUSER
CALLICOON CENTER — Albert H. Hauser of Callicoon
Center, a retired superintendent of bridge construction for the
Lane Construction Co. in Fultonville and a lifelong area resident,
died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at home. He was 95.
Son of the late Adam and Margaret Kraft Hauser,
he was born in Callicoon Center August 17, 1905. He was the widower
of Frances Edwards Hauser.
He was a member of the Catskill Chapter of the Antique
Automobile Club of America; the Sullivan County Beekeepers Association;
the Callicoon Center Schuetzen Verein and Delaware Lodge No. 561,
Free and Accepted Masons in Callicoon.
Survivors include a son, Albert W. and wife Elva
of Callicoon Center; two daughters, Audrey McCullough of Kingston
and Carla Hahn and husband Frank of Callicoon; a sister, Katherine
Borden of Liberty; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral
Home in Jeffersonville. The Rev. Robert Paquet officiated. Burial
was in the Callicoon Center Cemetery.

BERTHA JANE RICHNER LAUTENSCHLAGER
HONESDALE — Bertha Jane Richner Lautenschlager of
Honesdale, a former 14-year clerk for the former Kuester Community
Pastry in Honesdale, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, April
5, 2001 at home. She was 68.
Daughter of the late George Richner and Cornelia
Newenhouse Richner, she was born June 2, 1932 in Honesdale. She
was the widow of Harold R. Lautenschlager.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High School and
had worked for a brief time for the former Katz Company of Honesdale.
She attended the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle.
Survivors include her mother; two daughters, Sherry
Ficken of White Mills and Candy Schuler of Hawley; a son, Jeffrey
of Ocala, FL; five brothers, Bill Richner of Hallstead, James Richner
of Honesdale, Arthur Richner of Ocala, FL, Daniel Richner of Brazil
and John Richner of Honesdale; three sisters, Ruth Hauenstein of
Aldenville, Elizabeth Armstrong of Alberta, Canada and Mary Spurling
of Syracuse, NY; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, David Richner.
Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home
in Honesdale. Dr. Paul Williamson, pastor of Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle,
officiated. Burial was in the Indian Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.

LILLIAN V. BYRON STARK
HONESDALE — Lillian V. Byron Stark of Honesdale,
a 20-year employee of the former Katz Company in Honesdale, a 30-year
area resident, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Mountain Rest
Nursing Home in Scranton. She was 90.
Daughter and only child of the late Harry M. and
Margaret McGowan Byron, she was born June 16, 1910 in New York City.
She was the widow of Philip R. Stark.
She lived in Pleasant Mount for over 50 years and
ran the family grocery store for 16 years. She moved to Honesdale
in 1967 and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and its
Altar and Rosary Society in Honesdale; a member and former officer
in the Court St. Martin, Catholic Daughters of the Americas; a member
of the Wayne County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; a member of the
Senior Citizens and a fun-after-50 club.
Survivors include two sons, C. Nealon Stark of Chelmsford,
MA and Rev. Ronald P. Stark, O.F.M., a Franciscan Priest of New
York City; a daughter, Linda M. Fox of Scranton; seven grandchildren;
10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St.
Mary Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Her son, Rev. Ronald Stark,
officiated. Burial was in St. James Cemetery in Pleasant Mount.
WILLIAM PETER STRONG
HAWLEY — William Peter Strong of Hawley, a former
freight supervisor for Delta Airlines, died unexpectedly Tuesday,
March 27, 2001 at home. He was 60.
Son of the late Robert and Mary Reilly Strong, he
was born in Honesdale.
He was a graduate of Hawley High School and the
University of Scranton. He was a member of the National Guard and
an avid golfer and fisherman.
Survivors include two sons, Timothy of Goleta, CA
and James of Hawthorne, CA; three brothers, Robert C. of Phoenix,
AZ, Michael of Clarks Summit, and John of Lake George, NY.
A Memorial Mass was offered at Queen of Peace Roman
Catholic Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey officiated.
HELEN E. SWENDSEN
HONESDALE — Helen E. Swendsen of Honesdale, died
Monday, April 2, 2001 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She
was 85.
Daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Conbeer Olver,
she was born in Carbondale. She was the widow of A. Cecil Swendsen.
She was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class
of 1932. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church
in Honesdale and an active member of the United Methodist Women
and the Woman’s Club of Honesdale. She enjoyed her Thursday night
pinochle club and her Wednesday lunch travel group.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin C. of Jupiter,
FL, Gerald E. and wife Marilyn of Honesdale; a brother, Alton Olver
of Beach Grove; eight grandchildren and step-grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Joyce Schwinn
and two brothers, Harold and Leslie Olver.
Services were held in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral
Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul McCauley officiated. Burial was
in the Hillside Cemetery in Damascus.
