Teen scholarships

REGION — America’s National Teen-Ager Scholarship Foundation invites female teens to apply to participate in the 30th annual New York National Teen-Ager Scholarship Program, June 9-10, at Nyack College. There will also be a workshop held on April 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Palisades Mall, in the Raso Room.

The program includes two divisions: juniors, ages 12-15, and seniors ages 16-18. Prizes include two $1,000 savings bonds, and more than $100,000 in tuition scholarships. Two students will be flown to Opryland in Nashville, where they will compete in August, 2001, for a $10,000 and $5,000 cash scholarship, and numerous $1,500 savings bonds.

The National Teen-Ager Foundation has a non-profit, 501 C-3 status. Admissions counselors serve as judges and participate in a college fair during the program weekend. Representatives from the following colleges are scheduled to appear at the program to judge and recruit: Nyack College, Bard College, The College of New Rochelle, The College of St. Rose, Bronxville College, Dominican College of Blauvelt, Hartwick College, Iona College, Houghton College, LeMoyne College, Manhattanville College, Marymount College, Mount St. Mary College, Pace University, Russell Sage College, St. John’s University, Westchester Community College, St. John’s University and Wells College.

Students make good at SU

SYRACUSE — Michelle Morgan of Hancock will receive a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University. Morgan will be honored at the university’s 147th commencement ceremony to be held May 13, in the Carrier Dome.

The following students, enrolled in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, were named to the Dean’s List for the 2000 fall semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must achieve at least a 3.4 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester:

Lindsay Ratner of Liberty is a senior majoring in Arts and Sciences, Jayson Weinstein of Rock Hill is a sophomore majoring in Political Science, Chad Rowan of Roscoe is a senior majoring in Psychology, Harrison of Forestburgh is a freshman majoring in Chemistry, Jenna Pantel of South Fallsburg is a sophomore majoring in Arts and Sciences, Elizabeth Alexy of Swan Lake is a junior majoring in Anthropology, and Teresa Evangelista of Woodbourne is a senior majoring in Psychology.

The following students enrolled in Syracuse University’s School of Management were named to the Dean’s List for the 2001 fall semester:

Morris Tucker of Monticello is a sophomore majoring in General Studies in Management and Meghan Fox of White Lake is a senior majoring in Managerial Law and Public Policy.






Lower your liability

BETHEL — The Bethel Safety Associates will sponsor defensive driving courses at four different locations. The courses are open to all licensed drivers or individuals with a learner’s permit.

The six-hour course will reduce liability and collision premiums for three years. It will also reduce up to four points on a person’s driving record.

The course schedule is as follows:

April 5 and 6, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Callicoon Town Hall, sponsored by the First National Bank of Jeffersonville. To register call 845/482-4000.

Alumni match up

NARROWSBURG — The Sullivan West at Narrowsburg junior class will sponsor an alumni basketball game on Saturday, March 31 at the school gym. The girl’s game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the boys will play directly after. The games will feature challenges between the men’s and women’s alumni teams and the present Narrowsburg boys and girls varsity squads.

This year’s game is particularly meaningful as it is the final basketball event to be held in the Narrowsburg gym prior to the scheduled renovations to the school.

Scholarships for women

MONTICELLO — Kathleen LaBuda, Catskill Mountain Business and Professional Women’s Club Scholarship Committee Chairperson, announces that scholarship applications are available at all Sullivan County high school guidance departments.

Scholarships are available for high school graduating women and mature women entering or re-entering college.

Students at Sullivan, Orange and Ulster County Community Colleges who plan to complete the mature women application can obtain these applications at the Financial Aid Office of their college. All other mature students planning to apply should call 845/888-4910 or 845/794-3000, ext. 3306.






Music in our schools

CALLICOON — Sullivan West at Delaware Valley will present the annual Music in Our Schools Month on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. All school music groups will perform.

In the event of inclement weather, the program will be moved to Wednesday, April 4.
