Trojans top Eldred
for Division IV lead
By TOM KANE
ELDRED — A mayhem of noise and excitement rocked the
Eldred Central School (ECS) gymnasium from the opening blast to the final
buzzer, as the Sullivan West at Jeffersonville Youngsville (SW/JY) girls
basketball team sneaked by Eldred Central School (ECS) for the win. The
final score was 51 to 45.
At stake was nothing less than the first place Division
VI spot for Class D schools.
The half time score was 26-26, but in the third quarter
the Trojans began to pull away ever so slightly. The third quarter weighed
in at 43-37 with the advantage to SW/JY.
With only a minute and a half to play, ECS advanced within
three points of the Trojans, but two fast lay-ups by Aileen Semenetz kept
the spread intact. Final score was 51-45.
High scorers for SW/JY were Tiffany Hauser with 14, and
Shelisa Duquette and Semenetz each with 13.
“We went cold in the third quarter,” said ECS coach Frank
Kean. ECS center Stacie Blaut, who had 11 points in the first half, scored
only four in the second half.
“I couldn’t be heard by the players, the noise was so
bad,” SW/JY coach Ron Bernhardt said hoarsely, his voice almost gone. Bernhardt
alternated between a zone defense and a man-to-man. “We didn’t play the
zone very well,” he said.
SW/JY still faces Fallsburg, 0-9 in the league, at home,
and Tuxedo on the road, both league games. “If we win both, we go to sectionals,”
Bernhardt said.
SW/JY’s record is 17-1 overall and 9-1 in the league.
ECS is 16-3 overall and 9-2 in the league.
