EDNA MAY BATEMAN

HONESDALE — Edna May Bateman of Honesdale, formerly in the bookbinding and publishing business, died Tuesday, February 13, 2001 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 81.

Daughter of the late Edward and Mary Carey Costello, she was born in Paterson, NJ. She was the widow of James Joseph Bateman and James Patrick Boyle.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale.

Survivors include two sons, James J. of Paterson, NJ and Dennis M. of Lakewood, PA; a daughter, Rita A. Kennedy of Honesdale; a sister, Helen Dykhouse of Newton, NJ; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, John F.; a brother, Edward Costello; and a sister, Mary Frances Doughty.

Services were held in the Arthur Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. Burial will be in the Indian Orchard Cemetery.

BJORGE BERTELSEN

HONESDALE — Bjorge Bertelsen of Honesdale, a former marine engineer and dairy farmer, and a 33-year area resident, died January 31, 2001 at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, CA. He was 80.

Son of the late Einar and Dagney Bertelsen, he was born in Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Ingebjorg Vatna of Honesdale; a son, Ivar of North Hollywood, CA; a daughter, Anette Boshman of Lake Ariel; and a sister, Elna Knudsen of Grimstad, Norway.

Services were private.

DOUGLAS JAMES GETTEL

SUGARLAND, TX — Douglas James Gettel of Sugarland, TX, formerly of Kauneonga Lake, died of injuries sustained in an auto accident in Texas. He was 43.

Son of Jane Burleigh Gettle and the late Russell W. Gettel, he was born September 17, 1957.

Survivors include his wife, Andrea Basil Gettel of Sugarland, TX; his mother of Kauneonga Lake; four brothers, Gary and wife Noreen of Moravia, Robert and wife Donna of Alexandria, VA, William and wife Bette Jean “BJ” of Cochecton, and Daniel E. of Kauneonga Lake; nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Sugarland, TX. Cremation was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

LUCY FINKLE BEACH HALLOCK

MONTICELLO — Lucy Finkle Beach Hallock of Monticello, a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at home. She was 85.

Daughter of the late George and Mary Jane Schoonmaker Finkle, she was born June 9, 1915 in Middletown.

Survivors include a son, Jess Beach of Liberty; four daughters, Thelma Skinner of Harris, Mary Boyd of Monticello, Shirley Beam of Monticello and Edna Travis of Texas; 22 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard Beach.

Services were held at Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Monticello. The Rev. Robert C. Nadelen officiated. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery.

HILDA HILL

ELDRED — Hilda Hill of Eldred, a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Thursday, February 8, 2001 at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 90.

Daughter of the late William and Harriet Clausen Eldridge, she was born December 18, 1910 in Black Lake. She was the widow of William Hill.

Survivors include two daughters, Hazel Covart of White Lake and Alice Ferber of Callicoon; a son, Ernest of Wurtsboro; two sisters, Iva Foster of Kauneonga Lake and Peggy Tothard of Stroudsburg; a brother, William Eldridge of the state of Florida; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville. Burial was in the Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.

HAROLD W. KNAPP

MONGAUP VALLEY — Harold W. Knapp of Mongaup Valley, a retired repairman for the New York Telephone Company in Monticello and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, February 11, 2001 at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 76.

Son of Harold D. and Clara Wizeman, he was born June 24, 1924 in Hortonville. He was the widower of Gladys York Knapp.

He was a member of the Monticello, Fallsburg and Delaware Masonic Lodges of Free and Accepted Masons. He attained the rank of Grand Swordbearer in the Grand Lodge of Masons, State of New York; was a member of the NYS Maple Syrup Producers Association and the New York Telephone Pioneers.

Survivors include a good friend, Ruth Knapp of Mongaup Valley; a brother, Raymond and wife Marie of Windsor; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Knapp and Cathy Knapp, both of Florida; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl and Donald.

Services were held at Ramsay’s Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake. The Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiated. Burial will be in Wallkill Cemetery in Phillipsburg.

MICHAEL G. KOMENDA

HONESDALE — Michael G. Komenda of Honesdale, a former resident of Rutherford, NJ, a retired maintenance supervisor in the New Jersey school system, died Friday, February 9, 2001 at home. He was 74.

Son of the late Julius and Julia Komenda, he was born in Garfield, NJ.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and attended St. Joseph’s Church in Rileyville.

Survivors include his wife, Anne E. Horvath Komenda; two daughters, Betty Picone of Stillwater, NJ and Susan Hoffman of Cazenovia, NY; a sister, Mary Griffoul of Garfield, NJ; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Steven and George Komenda, Paul and Victor Barcsardi; and a sister, Julia Toth.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church in Rileyville. The Rev. Edward Finn officiated. His ashes will be buried at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayne Unit of the American Cancer Society or St. Joseph’s Church, Rileyville.

RITA J. MANGAN

HONESDALE — Rita J. Mangan of Honesdale, a retired 38-year stenographer at PP&L and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, February 12, 2001 at home. She was 85.

Daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes Burns Mangan, she was born in Honesdale.

She lived at the family home during her life. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, its Altar and Rosary Society and its Quilters Group; a member of the Court of St. Martin, Catholic Daughters of the Americas in Honesdale, and the 24-hour Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration at St. Mary’s Chapel.

Survivors include a sister, Agnes Champion of Sidney, NY; two brothers, Joseph of Honesdale and Robert of Georgetown, SC; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas, who died in Europe during World War II in the Army, and William.

A Mass was offered in St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

CLARA ALICE LAVALLEY MOSHER

HAWLEY — Clara Alice LaValley Mosher of Hawley, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, February 12, 2001at the Mercy Hospice in Scranton. She was74.

Daughter and last surviving member of the Harvey D. and Agnes Fisher LaValley family, she was born August 14, 1926 in Honesdale.

She is a graduate of Honesdale Catholic School and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, attending St. Mary Magdalen’s Church.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley M. Mosher, Sr.; a son, Stanley, Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Hawley; three daughters, Diana Krayeski of Tannersville, PA, Linda Burke and Patricia Mosher, both of Seminole, FL; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Harvey and Joseph LaValley and a sister, Alice Bodick.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in St. Mary Magdalen’s Church in Honesdale. Burial will be in the Indian Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.

ROLF WINDHORN, JR.

BEACH LAKE — Rolf Windhorn, Jr. of Beach Lake, a small engine mechanic specializing in motorcycle repair, and a 13-year area resident, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was 33.

Son of Rolf, Sr. and Marianne Kaufmann Windhorn of Beach Lake, he was born in Brooklyn, NY.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Windhorn and a daughter, Rachel Marie at home; his parents of Beach Lake; a sister, Anita Chanes and husband Marvin of Fort Lauderdale, FL; his maternal grandmother, Marie Kaufmann of Bremen, Germany; nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn officiated. Cremation took place at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott, NY.
