Where
to dump the trash?
By KRISTA GROMALSKI AND TOM KANE
SULLIVAN, WAYNE AND PIKE COUNTIES — A number of options
exist in the area for residents to dispose of their trash and recyclables.
Sullivan
transfer stations
Narrowsburg residents who were dismayed by the New Years
Day closing of the town transfer station on Route 97 should take heart.
Sullivan residents may use either of two Sullivan County
transfer stations, said John Kehlenbeck, Sullivan County Director of Solid
Waste. He said the transfer stations accept household waste, white goods
appliances, limited amounts of demolition waste and recyclable items such
as cans, clear glass, plastic containers, newspapers and corrugated cardboard.
A fee is charged for items other than recyclables. Hazardous waste and
liquids are not permitted.
For information call 845/794-4466.

Recycling
in Wayne County
The Wayne County Recycling Center, located on
Route 652 between Honesdale and Narrowsburg, does not take household garbage,
only recyclables.
It is open Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.,
and Saturday, 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
It handles three kinds of glass: clear, brown and blue,
in addition to cans, plastic containers, newspapers, magazines and corrugated
cardboard. White goods appliances are also accepted, as well as light iron
pieces.
For more information, call the center at 570/253-9727.
Recycling
in Pike County
Since August 2000, Pike County has collected approximately
200 tons of recyclable material at its six depot posts, according to Christine
Obser, recycling coordinator.
The county’s recycling program has been in effect since
that time and, “it’s working out well,” said Obser, who expects the program
to generate a small amount of revenue in the future.
Pike’s recycling program, according to Obser, has decreased
the cost of trash removal for residents on a per-bag program.
“We need to commend the citizens,” she said. “Without
them, this couldn’t work.”
Pike’s recycling centers, called depot sites, differ
from those in New York in that they do not accept household garbage, there
is no fee, and they are available to residents seven days a week, 24 hours
a day.
Items accepted for recycling, which may be commingled
in recycling containers, include cans, glass and plastic. Newspapers, phonebooks,
magazines and catalogs must be recycled separately.
Recyclables collected at the depot sites are taken to
the Lackawanna County Recycling Center, Obser said.
