Mixed up files spur creativity

DAMASCUS — Seventh graders at Damascus School recently read a Newbery Award-winning classic, “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” written by E.L. Konigsburg. The students designed and completed their own projects to correspond with the book. This group of students decided to write and perform a skit based on the book. This skit included a scene from a sequel, which they wrote themselves.

A month of history lessons

LIBERTY — Liberty Elementary School (LES) began its celebration of Black History Month with guest speakers Sherma Williams, owner of Main Street Dance in Liberty, and Oliver King. The guests discussed African American culture and how Black History Month came about.

The celebration is one of several planned at LES in February. As the month goes on, each grade will have the opportunity to partake in a special activity geared toward their age group.

On Friday, February 16 the second grade students will take part in a special arts and crafts activity. The students will create masks that relate to the history of African Americans.

On Friday, February 23 the third grade students will be doing some of their own home cooking with special instructions from students in the Sullivan County BOCES Culinary Program.

The fourth grade students will participate in a quilting project with Christine King on Monday, February 26. King will instruct students on how to design their own square for the quilt that she will later sew together in time to present to the class at graduation in June. This will also be a storytelling activity where the students will learn about the history of quilts and how each one tells a story of its own.

On Tuesday, February 27 two designated classes will dress up as famous African American people and parade around the school introducing their characters.

Members of Kwanzaa 7 will be available to assist the students during each scheduled activity.
