GREELEY — Ice sculptor Mark. S. Crouthamel put his chainsaw to work during a carving practice session in front of Alice’s Wonderland, Inc. on Route 6 in Greeley on January 12.

The completed sculpture included a crescent moon and fairy. Crouthamel, seen working on a section of the fairy, said if weather and time allowed he would sculpt an ice chain to hang a frozen star from the moon’s top point.

The artful piece of ice could not be photographed in its finished form, since it lasted only one day. It was toppled the following afternoon, according to John Karpiak, proprietor of Alice’s.

Crouthamel, owner of IceWorks of Tafton, is gearing up to compete in an ice-sculpting event at the Stowe, VT Winter Carnival on January 25 at the Stoweflake Mountain Resort.

If he places in the top three, he goes on to compete in the 2002 Olympic Qualifying round in Anchorage, AK.
