Indians take first victory

By MARY GREENE

NARROWSBURG — In a bout against Fallsburg on January 3 at home, the Narrowsburg girls varsity basketball team took the lead and never looked back.

At the end of the first quarter, Narrowsburg led 13-6. They held the lead through the first half, and at the end of the third quarter led 47-28. Final score was 57-30.

This is the first win for the Indians, who at the beginning of the season had to combine their junior varsity and varsity teams in order to have enough members for play. This, according to Narrowsburg coach Kevin Mann, has “been rough. We are a young team with only two seniors and one junior. The freshmen and sophomores have had to learn to play at a higher level. It’s shown in some of our stompings.”

But it was freshman Nadine McCarthy who scored the most points for Narrowsburg and in the game overall. McCarthy scored 17 points, and Narrowsburg’s Kim Jay had 11 points.

High scorer for Fallsburg was Tara Adams, with 14. Sara Ingber had 12.

About the win, the coach said, “It feels really good. The girls have worked harder and gotten along better lately. It shows.”

Fallsburg’s Coach Weiner declined comment.

Narrowsburg is 1-5, and Fallsburg is 0-5.

Merton wins driving title,
Sebolsky top trainer

MONTICELLO — Two new names, Greg Merton and Jess Sebolsky, topped the driver and trainer categories, respectively, at Monticello Raceway during the 2000 racing season. For each, it marked their first championship at the Mighty M.

Winning the dash-title with 262 driving victories was 27-year-old Greg Merton. A local talent from a harness-racing family, Merton vaulted to the top of the list early in the season and continued as the tracks leading driver right to the final day of the season. During 1999 Merton reined 155 wins, finishing second, 89 victories behind top driver Chris Long.

Runner-up to Merton was Bruce Aldrich, Jr. with 212 wins. It was the first time Aldrich, from Maine, competed regularly at Monticello. His aggressive driving style made him in demand as a top local catch-driver.

Former Mighty M two-time driving champ, Kyle DiBenedetto, finished third in races won with 158, followed by Cedric Washington who enjoyed his finest season reining 134 wins. Mike Merton, Greg’s brother, held down fifth place with 126 driving victories.

Twenty-six-year-old Jess Sebolsky, who has been a bridesmaid for the past three seasons, finally garnered his first training crown, harnessing 136 wins in 2000. In 1999 Sebolsky had 82 wins, finishing a distant second to Joe Minieri’s 218 victories.

Dick Crumley finished second in races won by a trainer with 77, followed by Peter Stratton’s 62 wins. Rounding out the top five were Art Green with 58 and Joe Schifano with 51.
