Crack
down on
a golf course
SHOHOLA - A field
investigation of Dan McKean's property on Shohola Falls road by the U.S.
Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service in Tobyhanna disclosed
that "unauthorized work has occurred in federally regulated waters, including
wetlands."
Shohola resident
Joe Zenes, who resides downstream from McKean, said development of the
property into a personal golf course and skeet shooting range has caused
considerable environmental damage, including the destruction of a stream.
The Fish and Wildlife
Service, in a letter to McKean dated June 12, 2000, said that their objective
is the "removal of the fill and restoration of the affected wetlands."
The EPA may assess penalties of up to $25,000 per day of violation, according
to the letter.
The Shohola Board
of Supervisors, according to Zenes, labels McKean's alterations a "golf
motif." Zenes has requested a public meeting on the issue.
