HALLOWEEN BRUSH FIRE

POND EDDY - Days after a similar unexplained fire burned over an old cemetery, a second fire put volunteers to work late on Halloween night.

About 30 firefighters were called out shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday to fight a brush fire burning on the steep hillside between Berm-Church Road and Route 97.

Lumberland fire chief Ken Flieger said no cause was apparent for either fire. No structures were involved and there were no reported injuries, he said.

Yulan, Highland Lake and Sparrowbush volunteers assisted Lumberland firefighters at the scene and the fire was brought under control in less than an hour.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Department and the state police reported no unusual Halloween-related incidents as of early Wednesday morning.
