Sullivan West students on the move?

By SANDRA DECKELMAN

JEFFERSONVILLE - A proposal to send Sullivan West/Narrowsburg (SW/NS) students to the Sullivan West/Jeffersonville (SW/JY) campus in the 2001/2002 school year was made public at a Sullivan West school board meeting on Wednesday, October 4.

If the current proposal, designed to free up space for the renovation of the Sullivan West/Delaware Valley (SW/DV) and SW/NS campuses, is approved, classes will be jumbled on both campuses at the start of the school year in September 2001. Grades 9-12 from SW/NS (approximately 100 students) will attend classes on the SW/JY campus, and several SW/DV elementary classes will be moved out of their building to alternate locations. Those locations could include the Delaware Youth Center in Callicoon or area church basements.

Other ideas have been discussed, but cost and convenience are the determining factors. "This is strictly a proposal, and other ideas are possible. Right now we are trying to determine what the effect would be on everyone" said Michael Johndrow, Superintendent of Schools at Sullivan West. According to Johndrow, the use of modular units on the school property and split-session classes have also been discussed.

The renovations, which include new windows, plumbing and heating , will need to be done in blocks of four to five classrooms at one time. "To insure the safety and comfort of the students," said Johndrow, "some inconvenience will need to be endured for a year."
