Cross-country action

By TOM KANE

JEFFERSONVILLE - Eight schools attended a large cross-country meet at Sullivan West on Tuesday, October 3.

In the boys division, Tri-Valley led the scoring with Cornwall second and Sullivan West third.

Other participating schools were Middletown, Livingston Manor, Eldred, Port Jervis and Liberty.

Sullivan West girls did not place. They have only three members on the team.

Over 100 runners participated.

In its first year in the Orange County League, Sullivan-West boys have a 12-5 record. They won two invitationals at Unatego and William Davidson last week.

"We're being ranked in the top ten cross country teams for Class D in the state," said George Rose, coach.

Freshman Ian Parnett has recently established himself as the team's lead runner, Rose said.

The girls won the Section 9 title last year but are short of members this year.

"The team has three outstanding runners in Kristin Clifford, Danielle Hendrickson and Jamie Clifford," Rose said. "All three have won medals this year and are strong candidates to go on to the state competition," he said.

Bears sneak a win over Indians

By MARY GREENE

NARROWSBURG - Against a backdrop of brilliant fall foliage, the Tri-Valley Bears defeated the Narrowsburg Indians 2-0 in a closely-matched game of girls' soccer on October 6. The field was treacherously muddy after a night of rain and both teams had difficulty keeping their footing. The Bears shot continually but most of their shots were from outside and Narrowsburg goal keeper Beth Meyer made a season-high 44 saves.

Tri-Valley's first goal was scored by Danielle Poley in the first half. The game remained at 1-0 until Megan Sheeley scored the second goal with less than a minute remaining. Tri-Valley goal keeper Alesia Kexford made five saves. There were no assists.

Bear's coach Mary Geusner said the game was characterized by "very tough footing. You could see that both teams were affected. Narrowsburg played very hard today, and very well. I didn't expect the challenge we got from them."

Narrowsburg coach Linda Pomes said her team played with "phenomenal effort." With only one sub on the bench they "played hard. Twenty six minutes and no one scored against them-the longest ever. Every day they play a little better."

Bulldogs bury Livingston Manor

By TOM KANE

JEFFERSONVILLE - Coming off two consecutive defeats, the Sullivan-West football team rebounded to conqueror Livingston Manor 34-12 last Saturday at their home field in Jeffersonville.

The Bulldogs overwhelmed Livingston Manor with a varied attack of passes, sweeps and pile-driving long rushes that put the score at 28-6 at the end of the first half.

Quarterback Bill Reichmann passed to Jeff Peters for a 55-yard touchdown. He later went again to Peters for a 60-yarder. He was 3 for 4.

On the ground, stalwart half back Kevin Mullally had 14 carries for 103 yards, two of them touchdowns. Mike Barrett took the ball 40 yard for another touchdown, all in the first half. Overall, Barrett had nine carries for 64 yards.

Livingston Manor's Scott Denman, who did a yeoman's job on the ground all day, went five yards for their single touchdown after taking the ball most of the time in the team's one successful drive.

In the second half, it was Barrett again for a 40-yard touchdown rush. From then on it was all Steve Mootz, who drilled 8 yards, 15 yards and 8 yards and 30 yards. Mootz wasn't able to carry it over but wore down the Manor defense. Over all, Mootz had five carries for 71 yards.

Sullivan West is 3-2 overall.

Nate Duffy had five carries for 23 yards.

"This team is getting better and better with each game," said Bulldog coach Ron Bauer. "We mixed it up by going in the air and then on the ground. And the defense only made one mistake. We're going to be difficult to beat."

"We didn't do anything different, just good, steady football playing," Mootz said after the game.

Next week, the Bulldogs travel to Roscoe.

Graby hits hard

LACKAWANNA - Former Delaware Valley High School athlete Nick Graby had three solo tackles for Lackawanna Junior College (5-0) on Saturday in a 58-7 win over SUNY Morrisville that gave the Falcons sole possession of first place in the Northeast Football Conference.

Over five games, Graby has seven solo tackles and one sack. Lackawanna has limited opponents to 64 yards rushing and 48 points.

Graby starts at defensive tackle.
