SHOHOLA - Mrs.
Jacobson's 4th grade class of the Shohola Elementary School collected
monarch larvae from milkweed plants. They brought them to class
and watched them form chrysalises, and then later emerge as butterflies.
The students released the butterflies and then used a map to track
the monarch's migration to Mexico. They each kept a journal of the
class's daily events about this project. It was a wonderful educational
experience for the students.
Take
action against domestic violence
Awareness
Month Events
HONESDALE -
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, recognized in October,
is a time for collective action. It is a time when communities throughout
the country unite to help end this devastating and deadly crime.
The U.S. Congress
passed the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month commemorative
legislation in 1989 and has continued to do so every year. In Pennsylvania
one adult or child dies about every three days as a result of this
abuse, according to newspaper articles compiled over the past eight
years by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV).
Victims' Intervention Program (VIP) has been working for the past
ten years to help victims of domestic violence gain access to the
support, safety, justice and resources desperately needed and deserved.
As part of
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, VIP will hold events
that pay tribute to the pain and perseverance of those who are abused
and honor those who have lost their lives. Events being held in
Wayne County include:
• An Empty
Piece at The Table Exhibit: October 16 to 20, at the Hawley Public
Library, in Hawley; and October 23 to 29, at Wayne County Public
Library.
• The Bookmark
Campaign: Throughout the month of October at area libraries.
The Empty Place
at The Table exhibit demonstrates the devastating result of violence
against women and children and helps ensure that these deaths are
not forgotten. The exhibit consists of place settings representative
of those lost to domestic violence. These public events provide
an opportunity to learn more about domestic violence and how to
end it.
