The thrill of victory

By MARY GREENE

NARROWSBURG - The Narrowsburg Indians took their first win in a league game against Livingston Manor (LM) September 27 at home.

Two goals were scored during the first half by Indian players Kim Jay and Katie Yacino, while LM remained scoreless. LM's Amy Krupp came up with a goal during the middle of the second half, which brought the score to 2-1. With ten minutes left to play, Narrowsburg's Kim Jay scored the third and final goal of the game on a penalty kick. Final score was 3-1, Indians.

Narrowsburg goalie Beth Meyer made 22 saves, while LM goalkeeper Danielle Franco made 5. There were no assists.

The high number of shots on goal by Livingston Manor led Coach Shirlee Davis to say her team just had a bad outing. "We had a high number of shots but they weren't in the net," she said. Two of her starters were benched with ankle injuries, which was "Narrowsburg's good fortune," said Davis. LM, like Narrowsburg, has a young team, with only two seniors.

Of the victory, Narrowsburg Coach Linda Poems said, "For the girls to come back after their game Monday [a crushing 10-0 loss to Delaware Valley] with this much spirit and heart says a lot about the character and personality of the girls on this team."

The victory marks the first OCL win for a Narrowsburg girls team.

Sullivan West loses to Greenwich

By TOM KANE

GREENWICH, NY - The Sullivan West Bulldog football team lost to Greenwich High School last Saturday 28 to 12. The contest was a non-league game.

The Bulldog's first touchedown came in the first quarter when Josh Long grabbed a fumble and ran five yards over the goal line. They missed the extra point, making the score 7 to 6. Nate Duffy scored the other touchdown on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Bill Reichmann.

Greenwich had a touchdown in each of the four quarters.

"We were inside their 10-yard line several times but neglected to score," said Coach Ron Bauer.

The Bulldogs had 175 yards rushing but scored only twice.

"We didn't stop their blitz by the linebacker," Bauer said. "Greenwich is a very powerful team on the ground."

Sullivan West has an overall record of 3-2 and a league record of 2-0.

Volleyball begins at Sullivan West

By TOM KANE

JEFFERSONVILLE - They're building a girls volleyball program at Sullivan West.

The girl's modified team is taking on more experienced teams, but Coach Jennifer Warner is not discouraged. After losing to Greenwood Lake last Thursday, 3-0, Warner said, "We got better as the contest wore on." The team played one other match against Ellenville which they lost.

The team is made up of 16 girls, 10 from Jeff-Youngsville and six from Delaware Valley. "They're getting to know each other," Warner said. "We have three eighth graders and the rest are seventh graders. If they all come back, we'll have a strong team."

"It's important to have more sports for girls," Warner said. "It doesn't matter how tall or short you are. The little ones get good at passing the ball to the taller girls who are spikers."
