JOHN A. CAPUTO

HAWLEY - John A. Caputo of Hawley, a former owner/operator of garages in New York City, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. He was 96.

Son of Antonio and Maria Petragalla Caputo, he was born in New York City. He was the widower of Mary Eleanor Herko Caputo.

He was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley. He was an award winning North American big game hunter.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Straniero of Tenafly, NJ; two granddaughters, Carla Barone and Paula Curtiss both of Tenafly, NJ; two grandsons, John Straniero and Michael Caputo, both of Tenafly, NJ; and five great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by two sons, Paul and John; and four brothers.

Services were held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church in Tenafly, NJ. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

JUDITH CLARK GARLOCK

PAUPACK - Judith Clark Garlock of Paupack Heights, Paupack, a 25-year elementary teacher and head second grade teacher in the Wallenpaupack Area School District, formerly of East Brunswick, NJ, died Monday, October 1, 2000 at home. She was 59.

Daughter of the late Leo T. Clark and Ruby Idella Phelps Clark, she was born in Poplar Bluff, MO.

She received her BS in education from Southeast Missouri University and completed graduate courses at Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers University. She taught elementary school in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, Springfield, and East Brunswick, NJ.

She attended St. Veronica's R.C. Church in Paupack.

Survivors include her husband, Jon A. Garlock of Paupack; two sons, Dr. Jason A. and Dr. Jordan, both of Portland, ME; two sisters, Carol Rock of Villa Hills, KY and Patti Losh of North Hills, CA; a brother, Ken Clark of Poplar Bluff, MO; nine nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Paupack.

GERALD GRIES

DAMASCUS - Gerald Gries of Damascus, a lifelong area resident, died Friday, September 29, 2000 at home. He was 65.

Son of Russell and Beatrice Weber Gries, he was born January 16, 1935 in Damascus.

He was a member of the Damascus Methodist Church of Damascus.

Survivors include seven brothers, Leroy and wife Elizabeth of Winter Haven, FL, George and wife Marion of Milanville, Charles and wife Mae of Damascus, Vernon and wife Norma of Phoenix, AZ, Walter and wife Rose of Cochecton, Allen of Tyler Hill, Harold of Damascus; six sisters, Helen Wilcox of Tyler Hill, Alice Turner of Damascus, Lena Glossenger and husband David of Bethany, Joyce Fuchs of Winter Haven, FL, Gloria Krier of Honesdale and Rosemary Bayly of Beach Lake.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and Russell; and a sister, Alma Hitty.

Services took place at the Damascus Methodist Church. The Rev. George Gallandorn officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Damascus.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Damascus United Methodist Church in Damascus or the Damascus Volunteer Ambulance in Damascus.

PER HELLEVIG

BARRYVILLE - Per Hellevig of Barryville, a professional engineer and retired commissioner of Sullivan County Dept. of Public Works, an area resident since 1963, died Sunday, October 1, 2000 at home. He was 72.

Son of Halfdan and Dagny Schjlderup Hellevig, he was born October 7, 1927 in Brooklyn.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife, Anne, at home; three daughters, Lori Alexander and husband John of Rockport, ME and Santa Rose Beach, FL, Karen Orpilla and husband Don of Stratford, CT and Bonnie Hellevig and fiancée Bob Reid of San Francisco, CA; two sons, Jack and wife Ariane of Glen Ridge, NJ, and Tom of San Francisco, CA; a sister, Magrette Hoth of Brooklyn; four grandchildren, Allison and Kelly Orpilla and Nick and Joe Hellevig; nieces and nephews and cousins in Norway.

He was predeceased by a brother, Halfdan.

Services took place at Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville. The Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiated. Cremation took place at the HG Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, PA.

JOSEPH LANGER

HONESDALE - Joseph Langer of Honesdale, a prior employee of the Wayne County Courthouse Custodial Department, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 22, 2000 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 57.

Son of the late William and Martha Langer, he was born November 5, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include two daughters, Trish Churchill and Stacey Leichman, both of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, James, Jr., Brittany and Kyle Churchill and Mercedes Leichman.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. Private burial was at the family's convenience.

EDWARD G. LUCIER

LAKEVILLE - Edward G. Lucier of Lakeville, an English teacher at the Wallenpaupack Area High School and an 11-year area resident, died Friday, September 29, 2000 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He was 54.

Son of Gerard E. Lucier and the late Shirley Moon Lucier, he was born in Bristol, CT.

He taught high school English in Connecticut and was formerly the principal at Big Bear High School in Big Bear, CA. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut where he majored in English and taught for several years before moving to California where he served as a vice-principal and later as principal. He was a well-respected teacher who was deeply involved with his students. He was selected three times by various senior classes as the teacher who had had the greatest impact on his students.

Survivors include his wife, Ann I. Lucier of Lakeville; his father of Honesdale; two sisters, Linda Crossman and Sheryl Kempinski, both of Sterling; two brothers, Robert of Southington, CT and William of Claxton, GA; two stepsons, Terry Larsen and Troy Larsen, both of Fort Lauderdale, FL; four nieces, Dawn Turano, Kelly Dix, Diane Lucier and Caitlyn Kempinski; and two nephews, Ron Bates and Robert Lucier.

Services were held at St. Thomas Moore R.C.Church. The Rev. Edward R. Scott, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Sterling Cemetery in Sterling.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallenpaupack Area School District for a memorial fund to be established in the name of Edward G. Lucier, or to the American Lung Association of NE PENNA, 738 S. Main Ave., Scranton, PA 18501.

GERALD J. MARSH, JR.

MONTICELLO - Gerald J. Marsh, Jr. of Monticello, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 in Monticello. He was 22.

Son of the late Gerald J., Sr. and Cynthia Novak Marsh, he was born February 13, 1978 in Harris.

Survivors include two brothers, John of Monticello and Kristopher of Neversink; his grandmother, Charlotte Kolakowski of Hawley, PA; three aunts, Alicia Shickle of Mongaup Valley, Cindy Burns of Fallsburg and Amy Kolakowski of Hawley, PA; and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Peter's Church in Monticello. Burial was in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery in Bloomingburg.

KATHLEEN NYGARD

HUDSON, FL - Kathleen Nygard of Hudson, FL, formerly of Smallwood, a former waitress, died Saturday, September 23, 2000 in Hudson, FL. She was 71.

Daughter of the late George and Helen Miller, she was born in Middletown, NY July 29, 1929. She was the widow of Nils Nygard.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Newham of Jeffersonville and Lori Jeffrey and husband C.T. of Richmond, VA; three sons, John and wife Linda of Deltona, FL, Randy of Kauneonga Lake and Danny and wife Lori of Woodbourne; two sisters, Irene Hitt of Woodbourne and Brenda Josef of Richmond, VA; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Cremation took place in Florida.

FLORENCE A. MECKLE VOSBURGH

NIAGARA FALLS - Florence A. Meckle Vosburgh of Niagara Falls, NY died Friday, September 15, 2000. She was 64.

Daughter of Herbert and Mabel Drake Meckle, she was born in Cochecton Center, NY.

Survivors include her husband, James Vosburgh; her mother Mabel Meckle Brock of Narrowsburg; two daughters, Linda McCloud and husband Michael and Debra of Niagara Falls; two sons, James, Jr. of Niagara Falls and William and wife Pam of Kenmore; a brother, William Meckle of East Dover, VT; a sister, Eleanor Nober of Narrowsburg; six grandchildren, Mike, Becky, Billy, James, Lisa and Jared; a great-grandson, Davin; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Meckle, Jr.

Services were held at Lane Funeral Home of Niagara Falls. The Rev. John Wetherwax officiated.

MARCELLA L. WILBUR

BEACH LAKE - Marcella L. Wilbur of Beach Lake, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a four year area resident, died Saturday, September 30,at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 76.

Daughter of William and Gertrude Butler LaJoy, she was born May 12, 1924 in Astoria, Queens.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert at home; two daughters, Maria Louise Reynolds of Conover, NC and Emelia K. of Beach Lake; three sons, Herbert Richards of Long Island, Michael of Greentown, PA and Sean of Sykesville, MD; three sisters, Gertrude Walker of Pinellas Park, FL, Betty Grief of Tampa, FL and Patricia Ann LaJoy Soper of Port Jefferson, NY; a brother, William LaJoy of FL; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg. Rev. Dr. Gordon Weightman officiated. Cremation took place at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott, NY.

JOHNNIE MAE WILSON

MONTICELLO - Johnnie Mae Wilson of Monticello, a retired nurse's aide at Long Island Jewish Nursing Home and a one-month area resident, died Monday, September 5, 2000 in Community General Hospital of Sullivan County in Harris. She was 70.

Daughter of the late Paul and Frances Jones Powell, she was born May 3, 1930 in Yanceyville, NC. She was the widow of Willie Wilson.

She had been a member of Local #1199, Health Care Employees Union in New York City.

Survivors include her goddaughter, Phyllis Givens of Monticello; a godson, Jiair Miles of New York, NY; two step-grandchildren Marlene Rameriz and Elizabeth Hernandez, both of the Bronx; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty. The Rev. Willie F. Smith and the Rev. Edward Miller officiated. Burial was in Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.
