Sullivan West wins first game

By TOM KANE

JEFFERSONVILLE - Kevin Mullally is a trailblazer.

The Sullivan West junior who played for Jeffersonville last year led his fellow Sullivan West Bulldogs to their first victory ever - over the Liberty Indians - with an impressive 200-yard performance on the ground last Sunday.

The score was Sullivan West 14, Liberty 0.

Mullally's first dash to the end zone, for 53 yards, came in the fourth quarter. His second, for 70 yards with 1:22 left to play, salted away Liberty.

He and the other Bulldogs travel to Spackenkill next week.

The game, played at their home field in Jeffersonville, marked the first time the players from the three merged schools- Jeffersonville, Delaware Valley and Narrowsburg-joined together. Last year, they were rivals.

"The boys are getting along great together," said Donna Compton, mother of two Bulldogs, Mike and John Compton. "They're one team now."

Liberty, defending champions of the Class C league last year, had a 10-0 record. The team has since lost a number of key players to graduation.

Liberty halfback, senior Mike Poje, led the Indians with a strong ground game, gaining 46 yards, but it wasn't enough to overcome Mullally and the Bulldogs.

Up to the fourth quarter, the two teams battled back and forth without scoring or getting close to the other's goal line. The Bulldogs got only 47 yards in the first half and 139 in the fourth quarter.

"Considering that this was their first time as a team they played well, " said Sullivan West coach Ron Bauer. "They made some mistakes but they played good defense and hit hard, especially in the hot weather."

The temperature, in the high 90s with intense humidity, made it necessary for officials to call several time outs for players to get water.

Paul Barrett added 65 more yards rushing for the Bulldogs.

Poje led Liberty in rushing.

Eldred to field a JV football team

By TOM KANE

ELDRED - Nothing can keep Eldred down. Rather than drop their football team, Eldred has hung on to their junior varsity season and is building toward a varsity season next year.

Last year, the school which has a total grade 7 to 12 enrollment of 375, about 187 of them boys, had to cancel its varsity football season after a number of unexpected injuries. School officials and coaches were afraid even more would be hurt if the varsity season continues.

This year, the plan is to groom the junior varsity.

"We're hoping to field a varsity team next year with players who will be experienced," said head junior varsity coach Phil Marrella.

Meanwhile, Marrella and assistant coach John Ligreci have been putting the team through its paces for the last two weeks.

The team will play in the Orange County League, mostly against Class C teams, and will have its first game against Tri-Valley on September 7 at home. The game is at 4:30 p.m.

Teams are classed according to total enrollment.

"We're taking one step backward, then two steps forward," Marrella said.

The team has one senior, Tim Shimer, 16, who is 290 pounds. Shimer is allowed to play junior varsity because he is only 16, Marrella said.

Another player, junior Tommy Phillips, is 315 pounds. "We have some big kids," the coach said.

Besides Tri-Valley, the team will play against Roscoe, Sullivan West, Spackenkill, O'Neill, Highland, Livingston Manor and Liberty.

The booster club has been busy raising money for the team under the leadership of Sandy Walter whose son, Todd, plays for the team.

"So far we have raised about $1,400 with a car wash, a coin drop and a booster booklet that is aimed at the local business community," she said. "The support has been wonderful."

The money was used to pay for a three-day camp for the team and will be used for things that the budget cannot provide, she said.
