Carnival: an old tradition returns
By SANDRA DECKELMAN
NARROWSBURG
- Hoping to build a yearly tradition to help celebrate their 100th
Anniversary in 2002, the Narrowsburg Fire Department hosted a comeback
parade and carnival this past weekend. The Labor Day carnival replaces
the old Fourth of July celebration, a tradition in Narrowsburg for
many years. Citing the expense of the fireworks (approximately $4000.00)
and the inability to contract a games company as the demise of the
Fourth celebration, Narrowsburg Fire Chief Craig Burkle said, "[The
carnival is] the same idea as the Fourth of July, without the fireworks."
Despite the
Labor Day weekend heat, carnival highlights included a parade down
Main Street, a live broadcast by WVOS DJ Mike Sakell, carnival rides,
craft and food vendors and a chicken barbecue at the carnival grounds
on Sunday.
