JUSTIN BALZANO

HARRIS - Justin Jorge Balzano, a second grade student at the Jeffersonville campus of Sullivan West Central School, died Saturday, August 19, 2000 as a result of injuries sustained from being hit by a car. He was 7.

Son of Joseph and Theresa Saenz Balzano of Harris, he was born February 9, 1993 in Harris.

Survivors include his parents, formerly of North Rd. in Youngsville; two brothers, Joseph and Jordan, at home; maternal grandparents, George and Elaine Saenz of Harris; paternal grandmother, Joan Balzano of Liberty; paternal grandparents, Ralph and Elizabeth Balzano of Sea Brook, TX; two great-grandmothers, Marie Balzano of Brooklyn; and Marie Houston of Harris; cousins, aunts and uncles.

Services were held in St. George's Church in Jeffersonville. The Rev. Robert Nee, O.F.M. officiated. Burial was in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

MARIE M. KREMPASKY BUDINGER

HONESDALE - Marie M. Krempasky Budinger of Honesdale, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at home. She was 88.

Daughter of the late Andrew and Victoria Buzawa Krempasky, she was born January 17, 1912 in Jessup. She was the widow of her first husband, John Elker.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

Survivors include two brothers, Joseph and Andrew Krempasky, both of Honesdale; three sisters, Emily Richter of Honesdale, Marge Sylylo of Philadelphia, and Ann Sak of New Jersey; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Helen and a brother, Martin.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Mary Magdalen's Church in Honesdale. Burial was in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Philadelphia.

EARL BASS

HONESDALE - Earl Bass of Cherry Ridge Township in Honesdale, a truck driver with Maid Rite Steak Company in Dunmore, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at Wayne Memorial Hospital Emergency Room after being stricken at home. He was 63.

Son of the late Mervin F. and Alice M. Brown Bass, he was born March 10, 1937 on Tryon Street in Honesdale.

Survivors include his wife, Dianna Gelatt Bass; three sons, Mike and wife Rita of Bethany, Butch Thompson and wife Noreen of Wilkes-Barre, Bill Thompson and wife Mary of Clarksville, TN; a daughter, Katie Larkin of Bellville, IL; a sister, Delores of Forest City; nine grandchildren, including Jason Thompson whom he raised the past 17 years; nieces and nephews. Also his friend and companion, his dog Cinnamon.

He was predeceased by a son, Tracy; a daughter, Terri Ann Thompson; a sister, Betty and a brother, Junior.

Services were private at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. Burial took place in Indian Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.

CLINTON E. FICKEN

HAWLEY - Clinton E. Ficken of Berlin Township in Hawley, operator of a dairy farm, formerly employed by PP&L, died at home Sunday, August 20, 2000. He was 81.

Son of the late Harry and Rebecca Ficken, he was born January 10, 1919 at the family homestead in Indian Orchard. He was the widower of Mary E. Barry Ficken.

He was a member of St. John-St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Honesdale.

Survivors include a son, Clinton J. of Forest City; a brother, Charles Sr. of White Mills; a granddaughter, Elizabeth A.; a nephew, Steve; a niece, Linda Arnold; nieces and nephews.

Services were private. Cremation took place at the Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald.

HENRY H. HEY

HONESDALE - Henry H. Hey of Honesdale, a union carpenter, currently serving as Constable in Oregon Township, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 77.

Son of the late Frank and Meta Hey, he was born February 11, 1923 in Cuxhaven, Germany.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale; the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 1855. He recently received a pin and gold watch from the Hudson Valley Carpenters Local #19, commemorating 50 years membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.

Survivors include his wife, Leola Spry Hey; a sister, Gertrude Vanderwel of Honesdale; a niece, Brenda Long and husband David of Poughkeepsie, NY; two grand-nephews; and a grand-niece.

Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn, pastor of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Honesdale.

HELEN JAHNKE

HONESDALE - Helen Jahnke of Honesdale, formerly of Hawley, died Thursday, August 24, 2000 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center where she was a resident for two years. She was 91.

Daughter of the late Rudolph Dannat and Anna Weiss, she was born in Germany. She was the widow of Ewald Jahnke.

She came to the United States in 1929. She operated a bar and restaurant in Valley Stream, NY. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hawley.

Survivors include a daughter, Edith Spratt of Dingman's Ferry; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Teeters East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. David Heckler officiated. Burial was in the Delaware Cemetery in Dingman's Ferry.

LYNNE M. JOHNSTON

NARROWSBURG - Lynne M. Johnston, a homemaker and two-year area resident, formerly of Bergen County, NJ and Atlanta, GA, died Saturday, August 26, 2000 in Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. She was 52.

Daughter of John A. and Naomi Forsythe Haberli, she was born February 23, 1948 in Englewood, NJ.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis, at home; her mother, Naomi Haberli of Hankins, NY; three daughters, Jennifer Stephens of Beaumont, TX, Sarah Mayham of Cartersville, GA and Kelly Johnston of Narrowsburg; a sister, Kim Uffleman of Rivervale, NJ; four brothers, Jack Haberli, Brad Haberli and Scott Haberli, all of Hankins, and Bruce Haberli of Riverdale, NJ; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Steven Knutsen officiated. Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

CHRISTEL KESTLER

GREELEY - Christel Kestler of Greeley, owner and operator with her husband of Kestler Communications and H & H Enterprises of Greeley, died Thursday, August 24, 2000 in Mercy Hospital in Scranton. She was 58.

Daughter of Karl and Luise Ulrich Pohlmann, she was born June 14, 1942 in Soligen, Germany.

Survivors include her husband, Harry J. Kestler; her mother, Luise Pohlmann of Germany; two daughters, Sharon Kestler of Moosic and Christine Breuer and husband Robert of Shohola; a brother, Horst Pohlmann and wife Dagmar of Germany; a sister, Brita Berger and husband, Herbert of Germany; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael.

A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Ann's Church in Shohola. The Rev. David Kramer officiated. Burial took place in the parish cemetery.

NICHOLAS LYCHOLAJ

GLEN SPEY - Nicholas Lycholaj of Glen Spey, a machine and tool designer and 20-year area resident, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at Horton Medical Center. He was 86.

Son of the late Gregory and Paraskewa Masciuak Lycholaj, he was born May 22, 1914 in Hungary.

He was a member of the American Engineering Society; Ukrainian Congress Committee; and the Organization for the Four Freedoms of Ukraine.

Survivors include his wife, Tamara Lycholaj, at home; two sons, Dan and wife Cathy of Clarks Summit, PA and George Lycholaj; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Peter and Vladimir.

A Liturgy Mass was offered at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Glen Spey. The Rev. Nestor Kowal officiated. Burial was in the Glen Spey Cemetery.

HAZEL C. MILLER

HONESDALE - Hazel C. Miller of Honesdale, a former examiner for the former Dale Sportswear and later for Katz Underwear Company, both of Honesdale, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 89.

Daughter of the late David and Mamie Herget Robbins, she was born May 28, 1911 in Honesdale.

She was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale and a member of the Texas #4 Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Teresa Miller of Honesdale; a brother, Floyd Robbins of Florida; four sisters, Helen Perrotti of New Jersey, Clara Fiel, Edna Klemek and Bertha Swartz, all of Honesdale; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn, pastor of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial was in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale.

RICHARD JEFFREY MILLER

HAWLEY - Richard Jeffrey Miller of Palmyra Township in Hawley, died Sunday, August 20, 2000 at Community Medical Center after injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 40.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy F. Warren Miller.

A memorial service took place at the Hawley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Martin Cox officiated. Cremation took place at the Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald.

ALBERT PANFILI

HONESDALE - Albert Panfili of Honesdale, a retired plumber and electrician for the former Murray Company in Honesdale, and former caretaker for Camp Delwood in Honesdale, died Wednesday, August 23, 2000 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 83.

Son of the last surviving member of the Rafael and Emilia Fofi Panfili family he was born June 29, 1917 in Carbondale.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist parish in Honesdale.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Barnes Vanderwell Panfili; a son, Denis; a daughter, Anita Gronwaldt, both of Honesdale; a stepson, John Vanderwell of Honesdale; two granddaughters; two-step granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by seven sisters, Mary Calzola, Elvira (Reba) Daniels, Clara and Eleanor Panfili, Enise Pucci, Eva Suarez and Ellen Bonini.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. Burial was in St. Mary Magdelen's Cemetery in Honesdale.

MARIE R. SCHALCK

NARROWSBURG - Marie R. Schalck of Narrowsburg, a retired elementary teacher for Narrowsburg Central School and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, August 23, 2000. She was 88.

Daughter of Chester and Mary Powell Robert, she was born May 16, 1912 in Beaver Brook. She was the widow of Henry Schalck.

She was a member of St. Francis R.C. Church and its Rosary Society; and a member of the Tusten Senior Citizens, both of Narrowsburg.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Neiger and husband Bill of Latham and Marian Trautwein of Narrowsburg; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis R.C. Church in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Thomas Jones officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tusten Volunteer Ambulance or to St. Francis R.C. Church, both of Narrowsburg, NY 12764.

JOSEPH C. ZAITUSKEY

GREELEY - Joseph C. Zaituskey of Greeley, a kitchen worker at Woodloch Pines in Hawley, and a 40-year area resident, died Sunday, August 27, 2000 in Greeley. He was 65.

Son of Joseph Zaituskey and Madeline Tuskey Zaituskey, he was born in Shenandoah, PA.

Survivors include a sister, Dolores C. Zaituskey of Greeley and several cousins.

Services were held at Teeter's First Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey, pastor of Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley, officiated. Burial was in Abington Hills Cemetery in Clarks Summit.

INEZ MAE ZWISLER

SPARTA, TN - Inez Mae Zwisler of Sparta, TN, formerly of Glen Spey, a retired mail carrier, died Thursday, August 17, 2000 at the Baptist DeKalb Hospital in Smithville. TN. She was 66.

Daughter of the late Philip and Mildred White Hocker of Glen Spey, NY she was born May 5, 1934.

Survivors include her husband, Robert A. Zwisler of Sparta, TN; a daughter, Teresa J. Vandermark of Rock Hill, NY; four sons, Patrick S. Meehan of Poughkeepsie, NY, Thomas E. Meehan of Spencer, TN, Kirk D. Meehan of Glen Spey, NY and David G. Meehan of Glen Spey; a sister, Phylis Englehart of Port Jervis, NY; a sister-in-law, Sheila Hocker of Glen Spey, NY; grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

No funeral services were held. The family has chosen direct cremation.
