| Who
will be the new treasurer?

MONTICELLO
- Dan Briggs' departure from the county Treasurer's office on October
1 will require an appointed successor.
Briggs said
"a dozen people have asked about the job." The question then is
which one and to a lesser extent, who will make the appointment.
Assistant Treasurer
Olga Parlow has served about 17 years in the office as well. Parlow,
a Forestburgh Republican, said she has notified the county Republican
Committee that she is a candidate for the job. "Now, it's just a
matter of wait and see," she said Monday
Earlier this
month, Briggs assumed the appointment would be made by the Governor,
but on Monday Assistant County Attorney Lynda Levine said the charter
provides the county legislature would make the appointment.
That could
be interesting, as Legislator Chris Cunningham's (DC-1) name has
also been mentioned as a possible replacement. Cunningham said Tuesday
that he had been asked about his availability and said he would
serve if asked. "That's all there is to it," he added.
Had Briggs
left in September, a candidate could have been placed on the ballot
this fall, but Briggs said he felt an obligation to complete the
upcoming county tax auction. Aside from that, the new treasurer
would then have been forced to run for election two years in a row,
which Briggs didn't feel was fair.
