BRUCE BARTONE

HONESDALE - Bruce Bartone of Honesdale, formerly of Putnam Valley, NY, a retired police officer in Croton-On-Hudson, NY died Saturday, August 12, 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Bertone; a daughter, Heather; his mother, Maryann Minelli; three sisters; and a brother.

HON. LAWRENCE H. COOKE

MONTICELLO - The Hon. Lawrence H. Cooke, former Chief Judge of the State of New York, died Thursday, August 17, 2000 at home. He was 85.

Son of the late Sullivan County Judge George L. Cooke and Mary Pond Cooke, he was born October 15, 1914 in Monticello.

He graduated from Monticello High School and Georgetown University, receiving its John Carroll Award. He received an LLB and LLD (hon) from Albany Law School, Union University and an LLD (hon) from Siena College, as well as similar degrees from Brooklyn Law School, NYU, Pace University and Syracuse University.

After admission to the New York Bar in 1938 he was an individual practitioner until his election as Sullivan County Judge, Surrogate and Children's Court Judge in 1954. He was named to the New York Supreme Court in 1962 and was elevated to the Appellate Division, Third Department in 1969. He was subsequently elected to the New York Court of Appeals as an Associate Justice and appointed Chief Judge of that Court by Governor Hugh Carey in 1979. As chief judge he served as chairman of the Conference of Chief Judges and became president of the National Center for State Courts in 1982.

He served as supervisor of the Town of Thompson and became chairman of the Sullivan County Board of Supervisors in 1947. He was active in firefighter organizations and served as president of the Monticello Fire Department, Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association. He was recently awarded the "Golden Trumpet Award" by the Firemen's Association of the State of New York.

He was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church of Monticello and received awards from other religious denominations. He was keynote speaker for the International Jewish Jurists and Lawyers Convention in Jerusalem and received the Golda Meir Memorial Award from the Jewish Lawyers Guild. He was awarded the Torch of Liberty by B'nai B'rith.

He received awards recognizing the reforms he had initiated on behalf of the women's Bar organizations throughout the State. He was interested in first amendment issues and was honored by the New York Society of Newspaper Editors in 1985 in granting him their Friend of the Press Award.

At the time of his death Lawrence Cooke was Of Counsel to the Albany Law Firm of Couch, White, Brenner and Feigenbaum and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Jeffersonville.

Survivors include his wife, Alice McCormack Cooke, at home; two sons, Edward and wife Colleen of Monticello and George L. II and wife Karen of Rock Hill; a daughter, Mary Lauren Opie and husband Richard of Amesbury, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, George Bradford.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Peter's Church in Monticello. Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

ANNE M. GOLDEN KAY

ENGLEWOOD, FL - Anne M. Golden Kay of Englewood, FL, a former 20-year Honesdale resident, and former employee of Moore Business Forms, Inc., died Monday, August 14, 2000 at the Englewood Community Hospital. She was 70.

Daughter of the late Byron and Alice McAndrew Golden, she was born May 10, 1930 at the Mid Valley Hospital in Peckville.

She received her early education in the Jessup, PA schools and then moved with her family to Niagra Falls, NY.

She was an active member of the Roman Catholic faith throughout her life and most recently at St. Raphael's Parish in Englewood. She was a former member of St. Mary Magdalen's Parish in Honesdale.

Survivors include her husband, Richard F. Kay; two sons, Wendell R. and wife Karen of Honesdale and Byron T. of Sarasota, FL; four daughters, Bridget A. of Lexington, KY, Patricia M. Przywieczerski and husband Robert of Frederick, MD, Kelly M. of Englewood, Mary Clare Mantley and husband Ronald of Brewster, MA; seven grandchildren, Susan, Kevin and Maureen Kay of Honesdale and Brennen, Sean and Shea Przywieczerski of Frederick, MD; a brother-in-law, Richard Seager of Indianapolis, IN; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Seager of Indianapolis, IN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Mary Magdalen's Church in Honesdale. Father Kevin Mulhern, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the Parish cemetery.

GREGORY M. MALLEN

SMALLWOOD - Gregory M. Mallen of Smallwood, a self-employed roofer and 20-year area resident, died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at home. He was 53.

Son of Melville and Catherine Murphy Mallen, he was born November 10, 1946 in New York City.

He was a member of St. Peter's Church in Monticello.

Survivors include his father, Melville Mallen of Long Island; his wife, Janyce DiCanio Mallen, at home; two sons, Edward of Lynbrook and Kevin at home; two daughters, Kimbalee Tagliamonta of Monticello and Kristina at home; two sisters, Gail Flores of Ronkonkoma and Cathy Licek of Tampa, FL; and two grandchildren, Alexandra Tagliamonta and Edward Mallen.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Joan Johnson and Eleanor Brooks.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Peter's Church in Monticello. The Rev. Robert Ginel officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.

STANLEY THOMAS MOIR

CAPE CANAVERAL, FL - Stanley Thomas Moir of Cape Canaveral, FL, formerly of Hawley, PA, a former employee of S.J. Bailey & Sons, died August 10, 2000 at home. He was 68.

Son of the late Stanley Eugene and Kathleen Harrison Moir, he was born October 23, 1931 in Scranton. He was the widower of Marion C. Moir.

He attended Florida Southern University and New York University. He is a U.S. Army veteran and served three years in Germany as a corporal. He worked in New York City as a computer programmer before locating to Honesdale in 1972.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Moir McCaffrey and Susan Maynard, both of Scranton; a son, Steven of Shohola; and six grandchildren.

A private service will be announced at a later date. Cremation took place at East coast crematory.

HERMAN SEGAL

HAWLEY - Herman Segal of Hawley, a former tailor and proprietor of Herman's Tailor Shop, died Tuesday, August 5, 2000 at the Jewish Home in Scranton. He was 85.

Son of the late Henry and Bessie Krakauer Segal, he was born in Brooklyn, NY.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; was a member of the VFW Post 5823 in Hawley; and was a member of the Junior Order of the American Mechanics in Dunmore.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Lucille Dein Segal; four daughters, Rita Warshawsky of Scranton, Marie Paterson of West Haven, CT, Carol Pillar of Hawley and Betsy of New York, NY; three sons, Alan of Jessup, John Annabale of Hawley and William Beilman of Tulsa, OK; a brother, George of Scottsdale, AZ; an ex-wife, Gertrude Tompson of Scranton; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Teeters' East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. Larry Major, pastor of the Word Fellowship, officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst.

JOHN V. WULFORST

YULAN - John V. Wullforst of Yulan, an employee of the Sullivan County Highway Department and a 27-year area resident, died Saturday, August 12, 2000 at Calvary Hospital. He was 46.

Son of the late Joseph J. and Marion Phalen Wulforst, he was born November 12, 1953 in Long Island.

He was a member of St. Anthony's R.C. Church in Yulan; the American Legion Ambulance Service in Eldred and a former captain of the Yulan Fire Department.

Survivors include three brothers, Joseph J. of Massapequa, Thomas of Yulan and Richard of Stony Brook; two sisters, Patricia O'Donnell of Spring Hill, PA and Susan Hatton of West Hempstead; seven nieces; nine nephews; five grand-nephews and a grand-niece.

He was predeceased by a brother, Dennis M. Wulforst.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony's Church in Yulan. The Rev Seanen San Fratello, O.F.M., officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

HENRY M. CROOKHORN

QUEENS - Henry M. Crookhorn of Queens, a former 47-year employee of the NY Telephone Company, died August 20, 2000. He was 88.

He was born February 1, 1912.

He was a World War II veteran, master sergeant in the European theater and was awarded Croix de Guerre medal.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Rundblad Crookhorn; a nephew, Edmund W.; a great-nephew, Michael; and two great-nieces, Erin and Alyssa.

Burial was in St James Cemetery, Queens, New York.
