Valley construction delayed, registration continues
By KRISTA GROMALSKI
MILFORD - With
less than a week before students return to class, completion of
construction on Delaware Valley School District's Physical Education
Buildings is several days behind, although Supervisor Candis Finan
said the August 21 deadline was "non-negotiable."
At the August
17 school board meeting the project awaited installation of a power
pole by the utility company Orange and Rockland, according to Ron
Kiner of Foreman Construction Managers. "Dedication ceremonies can
be held at the first football game," Kiner said.
On Monday,
school officials said the pole had been installed over the weekend
and construction would be completed before classes begin on August
28.
On the positive
side, Finan said the project saw an "aggressive summer" with the
installation of 85,000 square feet of flooring and 11,000 new light
bulbs.
The school
board also discussed purchasing video surveillance cameras for the
high school parking lot. "The sheriff recommended two cameras at
strategic points to panorama the whole campus," said board member
John Wroblewski. At the recommendation of board member Susan Casey,
the board agreed to consult with the Port Jervis School District
since it has already undergone the research and installation process.
In other business,
Finan said 375 students had not met immunization or physical examination
requirements for the upcoming school year despite efforts by the
district to facilitate the process. The district sent three letters
to families detailing dates of five-dollar examinations by the Department
of Health.
Students failing
to comply with the requirements "will be denied access to an education,"
said Finan.
Delaware Valley
schools open on Monday, August 28. Student registration is open
each day in August from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Office of Support
Services at the entrance to the Middle School cafeteria. For more
