Wayne Highlands School District opens Sept. 5

HONESDALE - Regular sessions of the schools of the Wayne Highlands School District will begin Tuesday September 5. The district cafeterias will be in operation on the first day of school. The prices for the school lunches will be as follows: Elementary pupils (K-4) $1.50; Secondary pupils (5-12) $1.75. Reduced price lunch is $.40. Extra milk will be $.40. Pupils are requested to have exact change for the first four school days.

All cafeterias will serve breakfast to grades K- 12 starting Wednesday September 6 with the exception of Kindergarten at Preston, which will offer breakfast starting Monday September 11. The price for school breakfast is $1 for grades K-12 and reduced priced breakfast is $.30.

Application forms for free or reduced priced lunches will be handed out in homeroom the first day of school. Families who think that they may be eligible for meal benefits are encouraged to apply.

Enrollment forms for the pupil accident insurance program will be distributed when the district schools are in session. The premium for school day protection will be $22 and the premium for two 24 hour protection will be $88. Directions for paying the insurance premiums will be given when the schools are in session.

Damascus Area School

Interviews will be scheduled with teachers for Kindergarten pupils and their parents on August 28, 31 and. September 1. Kindergarten classes will begin on Tuesday September 5. Regular registration and medical examinations should be completed before August 20. Transportation schedules for Kindergarten pupils will be available at the time of the interview.

Honesdale Area Schools

The grade assignments for the Honesdale Area Schools are as follows:

Stourbridge Elementary School-Kindergarten and Grade 1

Lakeside Elementary School-Grades 2 through 4

Wayne Highlands Middle School-Grades 5 through 8

Honesdale High School-Grades 9 through 12

High School and Middle School pupils will be admitted to the buildings at 8:10 a.m.

The normal dismissal time for both high school and elementary pupils will be 3:00 p.m.

Homeroom assignments for the pupils for the Honesdale Area Schools will be published. All pupils should be sure to learn their homeroom assignments before reporting to school on September 5.

Kindergarten registrations and medical examinations should be completed before August 20. Transportation information for kindergarten pupils will be available at the time of the interviews.

Interviews will be scheduled with teachers for Kindergarten pupils and their parents on August 25, 28 and September 5. Regular Kindergarten sessions will begin on Wednesday September 6. Kindergarten sessions will be from 8:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 12:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All kindergarten pupils will ride on the regular buses to school in the morning and home in the late afternoon.

Preston Area School

Regular sessions for pupils in grades 1 to 8 will begin on Tuesday September 5. Sessions for pupils attending Hancock Central School and Deposit Central School will begin on Wednesday September 6. Kindergarten parent/student conferences will be held on September 5. Kindergarten classes will begin on Wednesday, September 5.

Transportation to all Wayne Highlands School District buildings

All bus routes and starting times for the 2000-2001 school year will be the same as for the 1999-2000 school year except in cases where parents have been notified directly.






Center for Career Development open house

LIBERTY - Information on new course offerings and an assortment of continuing education opportunities will be shared with interested students at an Open House at the Center for Career Development on Tuesday August 29 at 6:30 p.m. The Open House is designed to give adult students interested in changing careers or enhancing their career skills an overview of the types of classes offered. The Center for Career Development is located at 35 Plaza Drive, Monticello.

Individuals can choose from educational programs including basic and advanced computers, GED classes, English as a Second Language, vocational classes and personal enrichment courses. GED and English as a Second Language classes are offered free of charge.

The newest addition to the schedule is the state-of-the-art Cisco Systems Networking Academy. This is a joint project between Sullivan County Community College and the BOCES Center for Career Development. For more information call 845/791-4070.






Preis Scholarship awarded to Zieger

LOCH SHELDRAKE - The Michael and Margaret Preis Memorial Scholarship for 2000 was awarded to Holly Zieger of Lake Huntington. The $500 scholarship is presented each year to a Sullivan County high school graduate who will pursue his or her education at Sullivan County Community College. The Allstate Insurance Company also provides matching funds to the recipient.

The Michael and Margaret Preis Memorial Scholarship is a personal grant from Edward T. Sykes. Sykes is president of Mike Preis, Inc. and has chosen the scholarship as a way to honor his company's founder and his wife. Preis established and operated an insurance agency in Narrowsburg for many years. He also opened agencies in Callicoon and Jeffersonville.

Sykes attended SCCC from 1966-68. He believes the scholarship helps deserving local students pursue an education and also recognizes the importance of SCCC.

Zieger begins her studies at SCCC in September.
