Road sign in Tusten seems to close a public road

By TOM KANE

TEN MILE RIVER - When does a sign and the words it contains confuse rather than clarify?

Such a sign has suddenly appeared along the Delaware River below the Ten Mile River access on Hankins Road. The dead-end road is a continuation of Crawford Road.

The sign reads: "Stop! Private property beyond this sign. No trespassing!"

"We put that sign up to stop the steady flow of people driving down the road, turning around on people's lawns, banging on their doors for directions and even camping out along the river on private property," said Tusten Supervisor Dick Crandall, who has a home on the road.

Crandall said the town was considering changing the wording of the sign to let people know that the properties along both sides of the public road are private.

"How do you say that clearly?" he said.

The town's highway department is going to make another stab at the wording, he said.
