Double work, double pay for judge

By DAVID HULSE

ELDRED - Reduced to a single town justice again, Highland officials agreed on Tuesday night that since Justice Franz Kopf is taking on the work of both justices, he should temporarily receive the salary of two justices.

The Highland Town Board similarly compensated former Justice Edward Hefferon earlier this year after the resignation of Justice Alan Hochhauser.

Kopf was appointed to replace Hochhauser and Hefferon resigned at the end of June, citing health concerns.

In other business on August 8, the board accepted a $25,850 bid from Poley Paving for the surfacing of the Eldred Senior Citizen Center parking lot. It agreed to use a capital reserve fund to finance the work and compensate the fund with $20,000 provided earlier in a state grant.

Supervisor Allan Schadt and Councilman Joe McDonald also reported on a meeting with a public relations representative from Park Place Entertainment, who polled them about their feelings on casino gambling. "A casino probably would help us with its ripple effect," Schadt said.
