The Marriage of Figaro at the Tusten Theatre

By SOFIA SINGHER

The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart's captivating comic opera, will be given four performances by the Delaware Valley Opera on Saturdays August 19 and 26 at 8 p.m. and Sundays August 20 and 27 at 3 p.m.

Based on a comedy by Beaumarchais, and with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro is one of Italian opera's most eloquent expressions, as well as a revolutionary work on both the musical and social fronts.

If the play from which the opera has been fashioned was a pointed attack against the decadent aristocracy of its day, The Marriage of Figaro has at its heart the vicissitudes of love. As Cherubino, a young page to the Countess he thinks he loves, touchingly sings:

"What is this feeling makes me so sad?

What is this feeling makes me so glad?

Pain that delights me,-how can it be?

Pleasure that pains me,-

Fettered, though free..."

The Marriage of Figaro will be sung in English and conducted by Music Director Ron DeFesi. The production is designed and staged by John Michel. Bonnie Draina is Stage Manager, and the Assistant Music Director is Christa Damris. The cast includes, in alphabetical order: Mary Burkart, Laura Chyn, Corinne Clark, Dan Cohen, John Costello, Aasma Dibble, Catherine Flynn, Alex Friedlander, Andrea Garritano, Tom Kane, Rudy Kellman, Leilah Kushner, Joan LaPoint, David Negron, Christine Pabon, Eilene Pabon, Stuart Root, Karen Sorenson, Michael Steup and Chandler Thompson.

Tickets are $15, $13 for students and seniors. The Tusten Theatre is at 208 Bridge Street (Route 52) in Narrowsburg, NY. For information and reservations call 845/252-7576.
