The
Marriage of Figaro at the Tusten Theatre
By SOFIA SINGHER
The Marriage
of Figaro, Mozart's captivating comic opera, will be given four
performances by the Delaware Valley Opera on Saturdays August 19
and 26 at 8 p.m. and Sundays August 20 and 27 at 3 p.m.
Based on a
comedy by Beaumarchais, and with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte,
Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro is one of Italian opera's most eloquent
expressions, as well as a revolutionary work on both the musical
and social fronts.
If the play
from which the opera has been fashioned was a pointed attack against
the decadent aristocracy of its day, The Marriage of Figaro has
at its heart the vicissitudes of love. As Cherubino, a young page
to the Countess he thinks he loves, touchingly sings:
|
"What
is this feeling makes me so sad?
What
is this feeling makes me so glad?
Pain
that delights me,-how can it be?
Pleasure
that pains me,-
Fettered,
though free..."
