Legislators trying to shut down solitaire

MONTICELLO -- With unauthorized use of county computers by employees a continuing problem, legislators in the Technology and Consumer Affairs Committee endorsed a policy last week outlining more than a dozen forbidden actions with county computers.

In future county employees may not add unapproved software, install additional hardware and drivers, move equipment from station, change system settings, or use the Internet for "inappropriate content." Officials admit some Internet connections have been used for pornographic site visits.

"I don't see anything about not playing games," Rusty Pomeroy (D-3) said.

Computer Services Supervisor Richard Robinson said he hoped to keep the rules general in terms of creating an overall rule disallowing non-business use.

The policy lists several levels of enforcement actions for violators starting with lower priority support and maintenance, to "locked down" operation solely with authorized software, to denied Internet access, to personnel disciplinary action.
