GLEN SPEY - Festival performers and sisters Lidiya, left, and Gabriella
Oros, right, of Irshawa, Ukraine, comprise a singing duet called
"Chreshenky"(Cherries). The 25th annual Verkhovyna Ukrainian Youth
Festival in Glen Spey last weekend was part of their tour in North
American. They are pictured with their teacher and musical director
Oksana Lykhovid.
The rainy past weekend curtailed most of the outdoor performances
Friday night and Saturday, and left the grounds soggy under foot
on Sunday. Despite a still-damp stage, dancers returned outdoors
on Sunday afternoon as the waiting crowd exceeded seating capacity
for an indoor performance.
Dancer Taras Nuhiray of Toronto said the stage was usable, but
too wet for some of the more athletic jumps. "The dancers fear we
won't be able to hold the landings. We'll do less dangerous moves,
but we'll still give them a performance," the youthful dancer said.
The three-day festival, which annually draws some 10,000 persons,
took place under a continuing cloud of local speculation about an
impending sale of the resort property by the Scranton based Ukrainian
Fraternal Association.
