DOROTHY
E. DAY
HONESDALE
- Dorothy E. Day of Honesdale, a retired seamstress and former employee
of Katz Underwear Company in Honesdale, died Saturday, July 8, 2000
in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 79.
Daughter
of the late William Thomas and Maude Estelle Gregory Haun, she was
born October 3, 1920 in Equinunk. She was the widow of James O.
Day.
Survivors
include two daughters, June Rose Hernandez of Denville, NJ, and
Norma Marie Day of Honesdale; a son, John J. of Honesdale; two brothers,
Harland D. Haun of Haughton, LA and George J. Haun of Honesdale;
five grandchildren, Michelle Lee Day of Waymart, Matthew James Day
of Lake Ariel, Patrick David Day of United States Navy in Georgia,
Jennifer June Hernandez and Edward Oscar Hernandez, both of Denville,
NJ; nieces and nephews.
She
was predeceased by four brothers, James, Carl, Myron and Lloyd Haun
and a sister, Anna Petutsky.
JOHN
DANIEL KEEGAN
HONESDALE
- John "Jack" Daniel Keegan of Honesdale, operator with his wife
of Jack's License Service in Honesdale, died Saturday, July 8, 2000
at home.
Son
and last of eight children born to the late Thomas and Ellen O'Neill
Keegan, he was raised on a farm in the Rock Lake area of Buckingham
Twp., in Wayne County. He was the widower of Shirley Margaret Moser
Keegan.
Later
in his life he worked for Bethlehem Steel and the Department of
Transportation in road maintenance; and after marriage joined with
his wife in operating her business, Shirley's Flower Shop, until
1968.
Throughout
his life he was a staunch Democrat. He served as mayor of Honesdale
in the mid-1970s and on a trip to Ireland spoke before Parliament
in Dublin. During his life he met with many political figures such
as governors, senators and other elected officials.
Survivors
include a son, John Jr. of Oakhurst, NJ, daughters, Margaret at
home and Kathleen Kresge of Tafton; a stepdaughter, Sue Goddard
of Mifflinburg; two sisters, Mary McGarry of East Stroudsburg and
Rose Moffat of Landsdale; seven grandchildren, Kenneth M. Kresgee
of Tafton, Page, Matthew and Taylor Keegan of Oakhurst, NJ and Cody,
Logan and Whitney Goddard of Mifflinburg; nieces and nephews.
He
was predeceased by five brothers and sisters.
The
funeral was from Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. Burial
was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Honesdale.
Memorial

MILDRED
LABARR
NARROWSBURG
- Mildred LaBarr of Narrowsburg, a retired bank cashier for United
National Bank, which became Norstar and then Fleet, a lifelong area
resident, died Sunday, July 16, 2000 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale. She was 71.
Daughter
of George and Hazel Weber LaBarr, she was born March 30, 1929 in
Beaver Brook.
She
was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg.
Survivors
include a sister, Ida Berger of Narrowsburg; two nephews, John Berger
of Sparrowburg and Robert Berger of Pittsburgh, PA; a brother-in-law,
Klendin Kirby of Yulan; a niece, Georgia Kirby of Yulan; several
other nieces and nephews.
She
was predeceased by two brothers, Ernest LaBarr and Charles LaBarr;
and a sister, Joan Kirby.
A
Memorial Service will take place with the time and place to be announced.
Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott. Burial
will be in the Beaver Brook Cemetery at a later date.

PAULINE
MARY MATKYKUNAS
HAWLEY
- Pauline Mary Matkykunas of Hawley, a retired plant worker for
Good Humor Ice Cream Company, died Thursday, July 13, 2000 at Wayne
Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 87.
Daughter
of the late Joseph Zurine and Mary Danko Zurine, she was born in
Simpson, PA. She was the widow of Joseph Peter Matkykunas.
She
was a member of Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley; and was a
member of the Hawley Senior Citizens Group.
Survivors
include a daughter, Gloria Kressevich of Blauvelt, NY; four grandchildren;
ten great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services
were held at Queen of Peace R.C. Church in Hawley. The Rev. William
B. Healey officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
ELIZABETH
MCKENNA
LACKAWAXEN
TWP. - Elizabeth McKenna of Lackawaxen Twp., a 25-year employee
of Morris County Rehabilitation Center for the Handicapped as a
physical therapist and then executive director, died Friday, July
14, 2000 at home. She was 81.
Daughter
of Charles E. Hooper and Hilda MacCracken Hooper, she was born in
Paterson, NJ.
She
attended Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ and graduated with
a diploma of Associate in Arts. She then attended the School of
Physical Therapy in New York and did her internship at Newton Hospital.
She was a lifetime member of the American Physical Therapy Association
and member of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association. She
was an active participant in the political activities in the County
as well as at the State and Federal level. She was instrumental
in starting the Civic Association in Lackawaxen Township, was a
member of the Pike County Road Task Force, the Visioning Process
Committee and the Pike County Council of Republican Women and was
appointed by the Governor to the Upper Delaware River Council.
Survivors
include a daughter, Kathleen Hummel of Lackawaxen Township; two
granddaughters, Kelly Obermiller and Kim Case, both of Welcome Lake;
a grandson, Chad Reed of Sydney, Australia; a brother, George Hooper
of Nutley, NJ; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She
was predeceased by a brother, Charles Hooper.
A
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 21, 11:00 a.m. at
Grace Episcopal Church in Honesdale.

SANDRA
L. PANCHYSHYN
LAKE
HUNTINGTON - Sandra L. Panchyshyn of Lake Huntington, a registered
nurse and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, July 8, 2000
at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital
in Callicoon.
Daughter
of Aaron Hann and Elisabeth Jones, she was born in Port Jarvis.
She
was a mother-baby nurse in Horton Medical Center in Middletown and
was a certified Lamaze instructor. She was the first president of
the Sullivan County Habitat for Humanity; a former member of the
Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a member of the Lake Huntington
Presbyterian Church.
Survivors
include a daughter, Elizabeth at home; a sister, Doris of Moutaindale;
three nieces and a nephew.
Services
were held at the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church in Lake Huntington.
The Rev. Richard K. Avery officiated. Burial was in the Fosterdale
Cemetery.

ROBERTS
HONESDALE
- Richard Roberts of Honesdale, a self-employed roofing contractor,
died Tuesday, July 2000, at Community Medical Center from injuries
sustained in an automobile accident. He was 37.
Son
of Helen Williams Blakely and the late Irving William Roberts, he
was born in Long Island, NY.
Survivors
include his long-time companion, Coreen; a son, Nicholas; a daughter
Lyndsay; seven sisters, Arlene Hughes, Florence Cassity, Linda Duddy,
all of New York, Helen Seminaro of Port Jefferson, Judy Roberts
of Celdon, Susan Roberts of Blakley and Laurie Williams of Carbondale,
PA; two brothers, William and Peter, both of New York; Rita and
Robert Kennedy; Grandma; nieces and nephews.
JANIE
MAE BENNER SMITH
HAWLEY
- Janie Mae Benner Smith of Barker St. Apartments in Hawley, formerly
of Greeley, a former waitress and bartender and a 3-1/2 year area
resident, died Thursday, July 13, 2000 at Wayne Memorial Hospital
in Honesdale. She was 75.
Daughter
of the late George A. Benner and Elizabeth Prunty Benner, she was
born in Sisterville, WV. She was the widow of Joseph W. Smith.
She
was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Lackawaxen.
Survivors
include a daughter, Peggy Kathleen Bescher of Lackawaxen; two sons,
David J. Smith of lake Ariel and Larry V. Andreff of Akron, OH;
a sister, Peggy Kincaid of El Segundo, CA; 17 grandchildren and
20 great-grandchildren.
A
Memorial Service was held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Lackawaxen.
The Rev. Arvo E. Beck, pastor, officiated.
