GLEN SPEY - Lumberland officials last week gave a tentative okay
to a zoning noise permit that would allow a New Jersey promoter
to stage a two-day, outdoor alternative rock concert at the Ukrainian
Fraternal Resort in September.
Details about the promotion group Dark Angel were sketchy as members
of the Environmental Management Council (EMC), which pre-screens
noise permit applications, were the only town officials to have
met with Dark Angel spokesman, Danyle Hentisz.
The September 15-16 concert would take place on the spacious soccer
fields in the rear of the resort property and feature ten bands,
including Ministry, The Lords of Acid and Eye Candy. Some 3,800
tickets would be sold and many of those attending would be camping
on the property, according to Hentisz EMC application.
Dark Angel was said to be working out details with new incoming
management at the resort. Bohdan Kandiuk, who currently works at
the resort told the town board he had heard nothing of the planned
concert.
Chief Constable Kirk Meehan said he had received a letter from
the promoters, which he had yet to read.
Some residents expressed concern about the noise and the sparse
information available to the board. "We don't want to be surprised
at who we're asking to come into our neighborhood," Igor Smetaniuk
said.
The town board initially tabled the application until August, but
EMC chair Ann Danuff argued that the delay might fatally delay the
promoter in completing other details. She suggested a conditional
approval, based on other agencies okays to other needed permits.
Danuff said Hentisz offered to pay the constables and fire department
for security and emergency services. "We felt it was okay. I'll
probably get killed if it goes bad, but we have to try something
new," she said.
The board approved the conditional application by a 4-1 vote, with
councilman Steve Hill voting against.
