Tusten-Cochecton Library Lines

By MARY PAIGE LANG-CLOUSE

NARROWSBURG - "The Cloister Walk" by Kathleen Norris will be discussed at the Tusten-Cochecton Library in Narrowsburg on Thursday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m.

"The Cloister Walk" is part record of the author's time among the Benedictines and part meditation on various aspects of monastic life. It demonstrates, from the rare perspective of someone who is both an insider and outsider, how immersion in the cloistered world-its ritual, its sense of community-can impart meaning to everyday events and deepen our secular lives. In this stirring and lyrical work, the monastery, often considered archaic and otherworldly, becomes immediate, accessible and relevant to us, no matter what our faith may be.

Pastor Phyllis Haynes will be leading this discussion. The book is now available at the library.

To sign up, drop by or call the library at 845/252-3360.

On July 11, 13, 18 and 20, the library is hosting a video workshop series led by artist Ron Littke. The workshops are separated as follows:

• Youth (12 to 17 years old) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $45. In this workshop participants will collaborate to write, shoot and edit a video. They will learn about script writing, shooting techniques, sound, lighting and editing.

• Adults (18 and up) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at a cost of $15. The goal of this workshop is to teach people how to use their camcorders as an artistic tool to tell stories. The classes will cover the technical aspects (how the equipment works), planning (scripting and storyboarding), and aesthetics (framing, varying the shots, lighting, sound and editing). Each participant will create their own short video.

• Children (three to 11 years) can come to the library with their parents and make a cartoon on Saturday, July 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., and 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at no cost. Participants will collaborate in making up a story, drawing the pictures, providing voices and sound effects and finally watching their own cartoon. Those who would like to may have their video put into the library collection. To register or for more information, call 845/252-3360. this project is made possible with funds from the Sullivan County Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the NY State Council of Arts, administered by the DVAA.

The library is holding its Big Book Sale during Riverfest this year, on Sunday, July 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
