DAMASCUS - For the second time in two months, the Damascus Township
Board of Supervisors postponed approval of an ordinance against
junkyards.
"There will be a short delay to make sure the ordinance is in exact
language," said Supervisor William Gager. "The ordinance didn't
have some facts right. We will be looking into a couple of minor
changes," he explained.
The board held a public hearing on the proposed ordinance last
Monday evening before the Supervisors' meeting. At this meeting,
objections were presented by some garage owners against some of
the language in the ordinance.
"We're going to pass this soon," said Supervisor Stan Kuta.
Last month, several residents spoke of the need for a junkyard
ordinance in the town. "I've been asking for this ordinance for
19 years," said Anne Kwitchoff. "Many houses have junkyards behind
them and people have old abandoned cars on their property and others
think they can dump garbage in an empty lot," Kwitchoff said.
"This is coming up at our next meeting," Gager said.
In other business, the board sent back to the planning board a
request by Princeton Towers to erect a cell tower in the hamlet
of Lookout. The board will hear the comments of neighbors of the
project next month.
The board also tentatively scheduled a special meeting of all the
volunteer fire companies in the town to discuss jurisdictional matters
for June 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the town hall.
The board approved raising the application fee for a zoning variance
to $200 up from $40. Board members felt the town was losing money
because it cost far more to conduct the variance process than the
lower fee. The fee schedule will be in effect on a six-month trial
basis.
