ECS plans Bjorn memorial

By TOM KANE

ELDRED — Kenneth Bjorn of Eldred dedicated much of his adult life to the youth of the Eldred Central School District (ECS). Now residents want to give something back.

“We are planning a major fundraising campaign to construct an outdoor recreational center to Bob’s memory,” said ECS social studies teacher and basketball coach Charles Donnelly, a spokesperson for the group planning the sports memorial. Bjorn, who was diagnosed with cancer in August 1992, died in September of 1993 at the Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne. He was 56.

“Our goal is to construct two basketball courts and two tennis courts that will be funded totally through private donations and fundraising events that we will begin soon,” said Donnelly.

Upon completion of the athletic complex, the group will donate the facility to the Eldred school district.

“We encourage all local organizations and individuals who would like to support this project to join our effort,” he said, adding they will contact groups in the county and surrounding areas that are known to support youth-related projects.

Bjorn coached Eldred girls’ basketball from 1977 to 1993 and led the team to 12 straight Western Sullivan League (WSL) titles. He led the Eldred WSL girls’ basketball to a 65-game winning streak that ended in 1989.

During 1967-68, his boys’ basketball team amassed a 25-0 record in the state Class D Division.

During his 25-year tenure at the school, he also coached golf, football and boys’ basketball.

“He was dedicated to the kids,” said ECS athletic director Al Wojtaszek. “He made their time in school and sports a very enjoyable experience. Because of him, a lot of them are much better today than they would have been without him.”

Bjorn is survived by his wife, Linda, daughter LisaYeomans and son Erik.

“We need a great deal of support to get this project in motion,” Donnelly said. “We are requesting any financial support or help you can give. Please help us construct this needed recreation center.”

Those wishing to donate time or money should contact Donnelly at 845/557-6014 or 858-2327.
